Hi funnel,
a female - female RS232 null modem cable is usually used to connect from your computer, to a receiver, and you are correct, there should be a male 9 pin com port on your computer, some newer computers/laptops, no longer have com ports.
If you have downloaded the loader, and software for your machine, your computer is working properly, and you are following the instructions correctly, then I would guess the problem lies with your cable.
You can buy a RS232, 2-5 Metre, cable for a few pounds, some places less, and then you will know it is wired correctly, and if you still have problems, we can rule the cable out of the equation.
If you do a google search for a RS232 null modem cable, you should easily find one.

Looking at the diagram in the pdf, it does appear though that a straight cable is needed - maybe the pin 2 -3 and 3 -2 data pins are reversed within the receiver?

In which case a 9 pin female - female gender changer should be connected to one end of a straight RS232 cable between receiver and PC.

My Fortecstar 5100 receiver uses the same method (straight cable with gender changer).
