A near perfect scan from a high pass M2-3 this morning.I usualy get lots of interference lines to the north on high passes.

Nice image - that is indeed Svalbard centre top. The little white blob in the cloud half way between Iceland & Svalbard will be Jan Mayen island

Since NOAA LEO sats were decomissioned I've turned my interests elsewhere. Now concentrating on GOES (East) and hopefilly Noaaport on 121W.
Trying to breeze a bit too fast. A 0.5m Viasat Ka dish. 6 turn LHCP helical. New NanoVNA-F v3 to tweak antenna performance.
I have GOES E. peaked in. Not so sure the dish will be large enough but I do have a signal. There seems to be more transponder/frequencies on the sat. than are documented.

Is anyone using an SDRPlay RSP2 for this and SatDump? I have a Nooelec LANA (unfiltered) for an LNA (just got a barebones unit and find it wont fit in the older LANA aluminum housing. I also have an a LANA that "went South" a short while ago. The new LANA is populated witm more componenst than the original one. Curiousity will have me doing a bit if RE to find the difference. But I have a working LNA and signals from GOES are there....not blasting in like Inmarsat. But there.

Is the RSP2 suited for Satdump and GOES reception? Satdump. I have the latest version. Was getting incorrect SR errors. Tried different versions. I have most since 2024 including updates for Windows. I do not use the CLI. Just GUI.
Jumping in to Satdump and trying to decde various modes. What's up with the psychedeic light show when the decoders are running. Messing with signal levels literally display a kaleidiscope pattern, Or trigger an epilectic fit!

Dont know. I wiped every instance of Satdump and associated directories and started from scratch Didtn'touch the registry.
Hopped all over the Internet and tried different versions of the SDRPlay API. Nothing worked. And older versions of SatDump have no direct frequency entry. The Nightlies are even worse.

What happened? I asked some questions that led me on the chase. And since nothing worked. Wiped it all again. Figured I'd wait for a volunteer to assist me.
I installed the latest version again. NO SR errors! I had tried the 2 decimation and 20 SR setting before. Now the error is gone.

The RSP2 seems to have a huge DC spike. And the spike is exactly where you're tuned. No option to slide the tune around like on SDR software.
So I'm tuned right smack on top of a DC spike. The spike removal setting does squat. Nothing. Spike remains.
How would you "tune around" the spike reliably. every tme? Also was reciving a not enough memory (or something like it) for a waterfall. I have buttloads of RAM in my pc.

I really don't wish to spend a pile of cash on a new SDR. I hit the roof at the RSP Duo. Which supposedly plays nice with Dump.
And the neverending racism of the RTL software devs who refuse to support EXTIO driver radios. Like my IC-R8600 or the Yaesu variants.
And others.
Guides are out there. Yup. Satdump would be cool if I could read a guide that is a real one. Correct and incorrect 'scope modulation windows.
A more friendly way to tune. At least around that damned DC spike. Ideas?
I tried the GRB frequency and decoder. Blinded by the spike.
Need a little help here.....
 
Your probably getting DC voltage into the receiver from your LNA, (if your still using one) NOOELEC has a DC block that goes in between the LNA and receiver. (see link below) That may help with DC problems with your receiver.

I use an AirSpy dongle and have no problems with any DC spikes.

FYI the RSP2 as well as most SDRPlay (that I know of) supply bias-t over coax to the radio.
Pretty sure if DC present at the receiver, it would be handled internal to the radio. Don't you think? Like the Nooelec SMArTee. It too has a switchable bias-t to power theirs and others LNA's.
But I appreciate the idea and will work on it to see what becomes.
I do notice that along with signal. Switching the DC off to the LAN. Everything plumments. Next? Even though I may get a super weak signal.
Pull the LNA and see what happens.

Surely not here to be the professor or guru. I find no instances of the LANA itself causing a DC spike.
But the core of SDR and I/Q results in the quadrature waveforms crossing at a zero point if you could look on an oscilloscope.
If two sine waveforms from the I/Q channel were placed over one another, in phase. They will both cross the zero point.
More reading and learning? Maybe. But a bit of it mentions "DC Spike". And SDR software is usually made to handle and compensate for it.
HDSDR has a calibration setting to either lessen or eliminate the spike. And it works very well.
With Dump. DC removal, I/Q compensation (will look again) "should" make a huge difference in the spike level.
But. A bit of reading does in fact mention that some SDR's do give a spike and others do not.

That doesn't handle what I and others see. Where you happen to be tuned is exactly at the center of the RF window. And a DC spike is there also.
My question is if I can offset my tune from the LO. Like you can with SDR software where you can center your cursor anyplace on the displayed RF window and there you are. Tuned.
Even IF I need to calculate an offset. Let's say my desired freq. is 1694 MHz. Offsetting the received (in the direct entry window) and lowering the freq. by a pre-determined 500 KHz. Will result in a true, desired received signal and be off center of the center where the spike is.
Exactly like you can with "real" SDR software and "real" SDR radios with waterfall and frequency displays.
Don't know. Hoping a seasoned Dump user can assist.

SatDump. Can you do this in future versions? Look at HDSDR, SDR#, others. Point your cursor over a signal in the RF display. Click and tune to it. If a spike is at the center. Your tune doesn't have to be. Discord and other "support" sites lack in response.

Couple of things. A bias-t with N-Tyoe connectors is on it's way. A Commscope not-chinesium legitimate unit that is fairly wideband. To be put at the RSP2. DC at the RF input no-more. Handy for the R8600 too when I want to use the LANA.
By the way. I used the LANA on the Icom. No DC spike from it.
And I looked at the schematic which showed that all RF in ports are capacitve coupled. So no DC would feed into the frontend.
But still. Proper bias-t "power injector" is on its way.

Ummm. Terry. Are any of your receptions with SatDump similar to GOES as far as the demodulator you use?
Is it possible to show the decoder windows? The damned kaleidoscope/psychedelic acid trip display I see here is giving me flashbacks. The '70's were good.....

Not many decent passes recently.All low or too wide.This is one of the better ones,The pass that is, not the weather.The nice days did not last long.Back to cloudy.In fact the early M2-3 pass was higher but a rubish scan.

OK I got a semi good pass today from M2-4, I had to crop out most of the junk, but as you can see it looks like some more rain heading my way, had some good thunder storms last nigh and a few today, more on the way for tomorrow.

I can receive 137 MHz sats. unitl the cows come home. The YouTube guy saveitforparts is inspiring me to start building a rbust tracker from a heavy duty surveillance camera mount. Something that will handle a larger dish than what I'm currently using.

SatDump is going to now need a lot of reading. Hoping I can find something that targets GOES satellites specifically.
I have a lot of questions. Terry. I'm guessing you haven't worked GOES at all.
I'm looking at the easiest way to get any sort of data at all GOES West is out of my view. So East is the target.|
I dont care. Text. Bulletins, telemetry data. Anything to at least show I might have adequate signal strength to receive it.

I'll slap up a photo or two before I sign out here. Over the days since I last was here. I've used my nanovna to build and tweak a new patch panel for my MSA that I used for Inmarsat. Inmarsat just "screams in". A dish isn't even needed for some signals from it.
That's the kicker. It was initially built for RHCP. For using it on the Raven/Viasat/Tooway dish I modded it for LHCP.
Inmarsat was impressive.

Next I looked for online patch antenna calculators and punchd in the numbers to mod the Inmarsat patch for GOES at 1694 MHz and making it linear. Not knowing if the holes I drilled in the initial paolarzed patch were screwing up performance. I used nylon flat head screws for a perch for the new pacth and spaced it at the design at 7mm from the backplane. The backplane dimensions were on par for the GOES active element. So I used it. The screws let me vary spacing to tweak in the VNA readings.
Soldered in a "cats whisker" on the SMA connector soledere to the backplane. That let me float the copper patch until SWR/Return Loss/Impedance were matched for 1694 MHz. A bit of trimming, actually filing, of the patch to bring it into resonance. Mark and drill the panel for the SMA center pin. As spot-on as could be. I cut the patch a touch bigger to start.

Because the dish look angle is built in. I set the degree scale for what Dish Pointer said to. Then positioned the patch for the exact highest signal strength as humanly possible.

Moving back to the LHCP helical. I may be repeating myself. Sorry if so. 7 turns and used on the dish resulted in too narrow beamwidth (but better gain) for the dish. So I trimmed first 1/2 turn from it. Using the dish specs converted from it's ka band design to l band,
Ended up now at 6 turns.
The design came from RF World. Showing the triangular impedance match. My VNA showed something like a low of 80 ohms impedance at a much lower target frequency. I soldered a piece of brass strip from another design to the triangle and bent it for a low 1.0 SWR and as close to 50 ohms impedance at 1694 MHz.
Put it on the dish after adding a reflector (cake tin lid) stiffener and trimming the lid to be flat.
Man. I'm trying here.
It's tweaked for the highest signal as can be had.

Belden 9913 coax. N-Type to SMA adapters. Nooelec LANA LNA. SDRPlay RSP2.
Usiing a DC block at the LANA. So no RSP1 biat t. LANA powered standalone from 5VDC. Didn't really notice a DC spike change.
SatDump Decimation at 1. Samplerate at 10 Msps.
Thought because signal was weak I needed my LNA set to max. at 8.
You just can't zoom into your received signal to see it in detail and if you're centered like you can with SDR software.
Played with LNA levels. Played with IF gain. You name it.

GOES-R HRIT. I get Viterbi Synced. Never ever get Deframer to do squat.
The BPSK "kaleidoscope". I've tried setting signal levels all over the place to get something like the (what's it called??) "Constellation". Yeah. that's it. Constellation that other programs ( Jaero, FSK, PSK, etc.) decoders show. Two dots, four dots. You're golden.

Anyone working GOES here? What is the easiest decoder to try to at least know I can get it to work. Then I can go from there.
In SatDump. When synched and seeing Viterbi supposed packets streaming in the window.
In the Signal window. A always see SNR (dB) at 0.
Playing around with lowering LNA Gain and IF Gain. To a much lower setting that expected. All the while retaining Synced in the Viterbi window.
I finally can get what looks like packets streaming in the Signal window and the Avg SNR (dB) levels pop above 0.
Played with IF gain. Tried all different AGC modes.
In the screenshot I have to tune to what is shown to get any ativity in the Signal window with maybe an Avg SNR (dB) of 0.3ish. And the Peak SNR (dB) only comes from moving the slider that cause a jump (glitch) in their movement.

Help? I'm really trying here.

Wow good reading here, I my self have not tried for the GOES West sat as I have too much other hardware in the way, also the only free coax feed I have for this is setup for the 139 MHz birds.(tight squeeze through the wall ducting with other coax)

I do have an A/B coax switch rated to 10 GHz I could use (switching between the 139 birds to GOES) but the GOES antenna would have to be mounted on the peak of the garage roof, with my bum leg I can't get up there to mount an antenna that's available from Nooelec, it's setup for the GOES satellites.

For future reference this is what the UK looks like when not under cloud.:D.
Hopefully we will get a few more like this.I have just installed Satdump on a new mini pc.The old one was getting a bit overloaded running three programs 24/7.
