Hello, I'm right in the middle of the Continental United States in Colorado and have had Satellite Internet with a Direc t way system from Hughes Satellite Corporation.

But I found a good deal on a TwinHan 1020A PC card and since my Direc t way account has been shut down in favor of other ISP providers, I am trying to retrofit a PC dish into a FTA reciever setup.

Currently using the internet LNB Direc t way provided with the other dish I can achieve 76-82% signal strength but no Transponder signal and no TV or music stations from Gal 10 {or 10R}. Not yet anyway, I suspect I might have to go downtown and get a new Linear LNB instead of using the Data LNB. Maybe it's a Ka band only LNB and won't grab Ku?
:-pointer

But I have these simple questions for you people: {See the LNB configuration page in the manual}

1. Is the 22 KHz tone enable only for tuning the dish?

2. Why would I want to enable Tone Burst ?

3. Why would I want to enable Data Burst ? - It's only for internet access use right?

4. Why would I want to enable DiSEqC ? Is that for multiple LNB setup or what?

By the way I realize that this may just be the cheapo route to good TV viewing. And judging by how low grade the information in the factory manual is it isn't meant to be much more than that. But if I get some decent TV I will fet me a set-top Satellite receiver box. I just feel violated by the Cable TV Companies billing me for mostly free TV channels with absolutely no FM at all.

Thanks for any and all insight in this matter. The Internet sat hookup was easy in comparison so far.

22Khz switching is for universal LNBs to enable switching to high band, DiSeqC is as you say for multiple LNB setups. You wouldn't need tone burst or data burst for normal sat DVB reception.

The type of LNB you require (linear or circular polarisation) will depend on what the satellite is broadcasting, check on Lyngsat.com to find out.

LNB Transponder switch settings are something I hadn't thought of. But the Ka DATA LNB vs Ku band LNB, what do you think about the possibility that a strictly High Band {Ka} DATA LNB might not even receive low band TV ?

See: _http://www.tech-faq.com/ku-band.shtml

The other thing is my feed horn is Rectangular, not round as is common with TV LNB's I seen so far. So I assume dish rotation is really sensitive.

You may be better off buying a new dish and Ku band universal LNB, they are not a lot of money and could save you a lot of grief, the Ka band LNB will be of no use for Standard DVB transmissions in the Ku band.

Okay , I am getting another LNB {maybe a couple of them} but I may try to spot in with the Direc t way dish a while yet.

Thank you. I am wondering about the voltage settings with this Boom, maybe totally impossible to use as I am trying to do at any rate.

Being from North America, you need to get a stardard linear lnbf for Galaxy 10R or any of the other satellites viewable over NA(other than the high powered dbs pay satellites). The only low band 10600-11700 satellite is PAS 9 at 58 degrees W. I agree with Rolfw, it might be easier to just buy a setup, lnbf and dish, they are not that expensive. If you were thinking of getting a stb at some point, it might be better to get it now, setting up a dish with the satellite card is not easy, doable, but much easier with a stb.
