Hi all,

Sorry this may be a pretty silly thing to ask but here goes anyway! Since putting up my motorised dish last year and securing the cables onto the dish arm with cable ties, I've found that every few months or so they end up sagging, leaving the cables hanging rather loosely and potentially loosening the LNB connectors.. The dish is rather awkward to get to and exposed, I'm guessing a combination of direct sunlight and bad weather is likely why they are weakening so easily (they were tied up tightly too!). I'd like to avoid climbing up the ladder every few months to sort it out and wondered whether black tape would be a sensible alternative - or any other suggestions?

Cheers

Black PVC tape is the best way to secure your cables.

Try to use more qualitative cable ties. However, I use most available cable ties (not necessary most expensive) and they stay for years.

I use copious amounts of cable ties on my dish farm and have never, ever, had any recalcitrant ones.

Cable ties cost nothing and can be changed before they break, especially if you like to play with your antennas/LNBs/cables. In some cases it is much easier to use small pieces of electrical copper wires. Then you can simply untie and lay out another coax or remove some. I also have many of such ties used.

Without knowing the design of dish I would hesitate to recommend, but in the past I have run a slightly larger diameter piece of flexible pipe over the existing feedarm, and shoved the cables down that.
On larger dishes I have also drilled a second hole near the retaining one for the arm, so the cables exit 'stage left' without being visible.

OpenBox X5 on a 1 meter motorized dish.
And now a 10 foot "C" band dish.

On most of the dishes I have installed I just run the coax cables down inside the LNB mounting arm, shields them quit nicely.(may not be possible on some LNB arms)

And always use good quality UV/outdoor rated cable ties, if you have severe weather problems then you can use several wraps of some good PVC electrical tape over the cable ties.

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
Then again, you could use Self-Amalgamating Tape - somewhat more time-consuming and expensive (and possibly "visually intrusive"), but that stuff won't deteriorate in sunlight.

I've read that colored/non-black ty wraps deteriorate in the sun much more rapidly than black ty wraps.
Would you by any chance use non-black ty wraps?

Likely true.

PS: as far as possible , all non-black cables, etc., are "hidden" behind fencing and so on to orevent UV damage.

I used to put insulating tape over ty raps, to stop the chance of injury from the cut edge.

Then I started wrapping around twice or thrice to whatever needed securing using the whole length of the rap,

I have a pack of reusable zip ties I got from LIDL years ago, quick to use and have yet to wear one out despite being loosened and tightened many times.

I also have some of those - seems a pity to use them in "permanent" installations - OTOH, some of mine secure the plastic netting over my sprouts as that has to occasionally be lifted to "weed" the area around that veg :D

I realise this forum has no section dealing with medical conditions.

"weed" as in "remove extraneous vegetation"!, as opposed to " I gotta go, now!" - which, if "needed", I could "do" straight through the netting without lifting it :-rofl2

I put my cables in flexible conduit and secured the conduit with s/s cable ties. Works fine but a devil to remove.
