The DIR: is probably wrong (and Linux is case sensitive: is your windows username Keith or keith?).

If the shared folder is called "recordings" change "C:\Recordings" to "Recordings" in the Communication Setup > Mount Manager page.

And remember it is case sensitive so "recordings" is different to "Recordings" and will not be recognised by your Dreambox.

And to confirm, your PC's IP address is 192.168.1.55 and the windows user is Keith with no password?

Using a web browser, can you access \\192.168.1.55\Recordings

Does the folder have a capital R on your PC?

And tick the automount box.

Your LocalDir should probably be something other than /hdd/media.

Make a new directory somewhere on the dreambox, e.g. something like '/mnt/recordings' would be standard practice.

Then set LocalDir to '/mnt/recordings'.

I've found that Linux plays nicer with Windowz if you use a password.

I've also found that the 'Automount' is easier to setup,

Go to BP-> Setings -> Automount (Or something similar)

Why do want to? The LocalDir varies from Dreambox to Dreambox- it is different on my 500 and 7020.

Do you have a /mnt folder?

My 7020 has /media/hdd (internal HDD) and I think my 500 had /mnt/ (mounted HDD on my PC).

If you search the forum there are a few old CIFS related posts.

I ask again: Using a web browser, can you access \\192.168.1.55\Recordings??

When I say 'directory' I mean what most people call a folder.

There are many ways to do this that you are probably familiar with.

If you use telnet, just type the following,
Code:
mkdir /mnt/recordings

Thats it.

In answer to your question MHKU I have just tried it now and no i cannot access the Recordings folder from my web browser and the folder is spelled with a capital R. I just created that folder in my documents and allowed sharing etc on the file. Does that folder need to be in a specific place?

Thats fine if you are only using one mount point.

You cant have more than one mount to, say /mnt/hdd at any one time.
If you intend using more than one mount point, you are better off making seperate directories for each one so that it automounts, rather than mount/unmount manually each time you want to access different media.

E.g.
I have one of my PC's hard drives (with video, music etc) always mounted at one point. The DVD drive is mounted elsewhere so that I can put DVDs in the PC and control/play them back on TV via the dreambox interface + remote.

Is the shared name "Recordings"? And you gave rwx (read write execute) permissions to user Keith (who has no password) on this folder?

On the PC, in Explorer what do you see when you type \\192.168.1.55\

This means your network settings are ok.

Your problem lies with either access permissions or wrong mount configuration.

Type/Copy it exactly as follows.

\\192.168.1.55\recordings\

(windows doesn't care about upper/lower case)

Good,
No need to ftp any thing to the dreambox.

Are you sure a folder exists on the dreambox HDD called media?

You should be able to mount using the settings in your first post + the password.

When you save the settings, reboot the dreambox. I have had trouble getting mounts to work with the green button, sometimes I just reboot.

After the dreambox reboots, change to filemode in the dreambox menu. When browsing files, press the red button.

you should see the contents of your recordings directory by browsing to.
/hdd/media

There are two parts to setting up a mount:

1. Setup a folder (directory) on your PC
2. Create a username/ password and give it full permission on that folder.
3. Share the folder.

4. Find the correct name for your Dreambox LocalDir.
5. Set up the Mount Manager page.

If steps 1-3 are wrong it won't work regardless of how the Mount Manager is setup do lets get the PC setup for sharing first and worry about the Dreambox configuration later?

I don't have XP Home so can't really help you other than to point you to google and these off-the-top-of-my-head comments:

You will probably need to setup your PC as a networked PC and you will get some extra "features" with respect to sharing and users. When setup correctly when you switch on your PC you will be prompted for a username/ password.

A few things to check:

In Explorer is Folder Options > View > Use Simple File Sharing ticked or unticked?

In Start > settings > Network Connections > Local Area Connection > Properties is File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks shown (installed)?

Ok I have finally figured out how to access the setting of file permissions with xp home edition

1. Click on the start button
2. Then run
3. Type shrpubw
4. Chose the folder whose permissions you want to change and give the share a name
5. Click next, now you can chose custom if you want to have full options.

It seems home edition has less options than pro and also seems quite intricate to uncheck the following option "In Explorer is Folder Options > View > Use Simple File Sharing ticked or unticked?" by default home edition always has simple file sharing enabled so I am trying to see if I can do something about this. I still haven't managed to mount the drive and am still unsure exactly what to put in local dir: in mount manager.

Also just a thought does it have anything to do with Nameserver or gateway on the communication setup?

Nameserver = The device on the network that translates IP addresses to host name, eg 192.168.1.101 = Dreambox. Usually this would be your DSL router/modem.

You are using an IP address to configure your mount. So this setting doesn't matter here.

Gateway = The device on the network that is directly connected to the internet. Usually this would be your DSL router/modem. Any device on the network that wants to connect to the internet does so via the gateway.

Again, not relevant here.

This can be any empty directory you want.
Have you created a directory to mount to as described above? or even checked that /hdd/media exists? My DM-600 does not have a directory called /hdd/media, Did you create this directory?

I cant see why you are having so much trouble creating a share, The easy way to check that sharing is enabled is to run the network setup wizard from Control Panel -> Network Connections.

The last step will ask whether or not File Sharing should be enabled.

i had the same problem as erukus and what i eventually stumbled upon was that my free version of zonealarm was blocking my eagle's attempts to communicate with my pc.

My solution was to add my eagle to zonealarm's trusted zones list via its 'Firewall' then 'Zones' settings page, and now i can successfully mount my chosen pc folder on my eagle's 'Mount Manager' screen.

Hope this helps.
