No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

Using the "Other channels" option on the sky box would get you some channels, but not all of them, and there's no guarantee it'll remember them either, your best bet is to use the sky box for sky and a real satellite box for real satellite TV... :D

And using a real satellite box would mean you could throw in a DiSEqC switch to switch between the two feeds, something a sky box cannot do, and you'd probably be able to set up the switch so that the 28e feed is on input 1 so that when the real box is powered down or in Standby, you could loop through to the sky box and use it as normal, though I've never tried that so can't be 100% sure of success... :)

Pretty much any non-sky receiver will have DiSEqC functions, so plenty to choose from... :)

How big is the 28E dish? Anything bigger than a 1.2m offset and you can put 26E on the same dish. A Sky receiver can't control a DiSEqC switch so if you want to watch both satellites from one receiver you will need a generic receiver. If you want a proper EPG you can use a Freesat receiver (and watch 26E in non-Freesat mode) or a Linux one.

You certainly used to be able to use a Sky box - just about. You hadto use something like a manual A/B switch.

However, Sky boxes are notoriously flaky about being used away from 28E.......

And of course you are limited to SR's of 22000 / 27500

I didn't think about a manual switch. It would work fine, but means bringing a second co-ax cable into the living area.

Most of the interesting transponders (MBC, Fox, etc) are 27500 SR.

To be honest unless its just for an occasional look you are better off buying another receiver simply because you have to go through the Other Channels rigmarole every time you want to change channel.

sorry maybe its me.i need to update poor brits at a low price they have lost bbc news,itv,c5 .they will have from a 60cm to 1m dish.i have used non-sky boxes on 28 before and they dont work, they are always changeing pid etc,so to watch 28e you need a sky box...however,26e is quite stable and makes it fine for the other channels button. i need to do this for a MAX of €99 (inc a 60cm dish) and my profit..

You're joking, right? After paying 250€ per month just for Social Security plus IRPF and IVA there is no way you're going to get me to fit a system for 99€, let alone supply the parts.

Let me refresh your memory. By the way, I would say, in this neck of the woods, it is pretty much true. Tomorrow I've got a job to fit a 1.8m Famaval dish for a neighbour. He's currently got a 1.5m Gibi but that drops BBC1 and 2, and ITV2/3/4 about 9:30pm. All the other channels are available one way or another. I told him that from some time in 2012 the 1.8m dish won't be necessary, at least for the time being, maybe from as early as January, but he said he must have it because his kids are visiting at chrismas and they'd expect it.

no im only fitting a 60cm dish, lnb (for arabsat) ,and a external V/H switch...im not putting in any cable or box or moving dish at 28e...cost €40...so profit €60...
thats one reason (among others) i need to use the sky box...

How is your profit 60€?

Here's how I see it. Parts 40€, IVA 15.25€, Fuel 5€, IRPF 12.05€, SS 10€ = 82.30€

Which leaves you 16.70€ profit. And that doesn't even factor in advertising, sourcing stock, time, phone calls, receipt books, accountant's fees, wear and tear on your car, tools, meter, etc.

You do realise that all current satellite boxes do the V/H and Lo-Hi switching by themselves, don't you? :confused

Unless you mean an A/B switch, but I'd still advocate a real satellite receiver with a DiSEqC switch, to automate things...

And I agree that the figures don't add up, you're going to be running at a major loss if you go about doing things the way you describe...

And if the brits out there are hard-up, then how can they afford to have luxuries like sky? :confused

the brits dont have SKY they have a sky box - no payments...

and you just need a V/H switch at the dish end simples ...
MBC 2,4,action,max ,ktv, bbc world, euronews,al jaz english, fox movies all are on 26-H arabsat (new 60cm dish and lnb)
movie for men, true movies 1 and 2 ,true entertainment, cbs drama, cbs reality ,cnn,Sky new are all V-28 astra (existing dish)

The more I look at that, the more I think of something a famous starship engineer once said;

The more you over-think the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drains.

In my mind, this is what you need connected in the line from the dish:

2 (or more) dishes - DiSEqC Switch - Proper satellite box (even a cheap Lidl affair) - Sky box

Easy as that, there's no need for a H/V switch, tone inserter, or anything else, all you need to add is a proper satellite receiver, regardless if it "works" or not (they do work, people just expect them to work like sky boxes, which they don't), and a DiSEqC switch, that's it...

A simple illustration of a simple setup as I describe (with some sarcasm, cos poor, hard-up brits couldn't possibly afford LCD or Plasma TVs!!):

thanls for trying to help, but you seem to be looking at this from ´whats best´ rather then
´what makes me most profit´ with a simple V/H switch, and a 60cm dish there is no change inside the house, and i can do the job in an hour....thanks for your ideas..

If it were me, I'd be more interested in customer satisfaction guaranteeing me more work in the future than looking at the profits and seeing how little I can spend on a job, doesn't seem ethical to make so much money from doing so little...

Think you're missing the point of the exercise 2cv, it's to try and find an island wide solution which can be achieved for €99 and still maintain a profit margin, not much point in doing loads of €99 installations if you don't make more than a few Euros profit. No doubt the best solution would be a second receiver, but if customers want budget jobs, then you have to look at the most cost effective way of doing it.
