I have some questions which are probably very easy to answer.

To try to keep a long story short...

I have a satellite/receiver picking up a foreign based package (paid for yearly in the foreign country). This is now an old receiver (about 8 years old) from abroad that came with the original 'installation'. (registered abroad - bought it back the the UK - family abroad so able to do this)

My questions are with the receiver. I want to upgrade it as the foreign provider rolled out HD services a while back. For getting a new HD receiver I could ask family to buy one abroad (an 'official' one) and then send it to me. However, I would prefer to buy over here as looking around it's the same kind of price and a lot less hassle.

So eventually my questions (sorry.. I am not technically savvy with this. 8 years of the receiver sitting under the telly!)..

Is it as easy as that? I can just swap receivers? Take the card out of old one and put it into new one and it will still work? There is no kind of registration needed to make the actual receiver work? I can easily get the upgrade in the package to HD as my family would just contact the satellite provider and increase the package to HD... so it's just the receiver I am worried about. I don't want to buy a new one and then it not working.

Apologies for my complete ignorance.

Hello

Welcome to the forum badgeruk

In answer to your main question, the answer is no it is not as easy as that to swap stb's or not necessarily so. In order for anyone to properly begin to answer the questions raised, we would have to know what package you are currently subscribing to and on what satellite as this then (hopefully) determines the encryption being used and hence the type of stb required to work with that encryption system. Mulitcrypt does not cover all bases despite its name

Yes, as some packages will only work in official receivers, some will only update in official receivers, some packages pair their cards to the receiver, some will only work with official CAMS, some work in any receiver with a multicrypt card slot.

Without knowing which package it is, The only guaranteed way of getting it to work, is to get your family to upgrade your box for you, and they would possibly need your card too.

Than you for your speedy replies!

The package is from Cyfra+. The receiver I have is (according to the account, a 'TYP 05 MEDIASAT'). I looked on the back and the make is a PACE, model CP3000P.
The actual card did get upgraded in September 2008, but I'm not sure why.. (So I've had only 2 cards since 2001ish)

I was looking to upgrade to a PACE HDS7241 which is the official one. (The other offical one is a Philips HD PVR 7201).
There are also others which are for sale on popular auction sites which state they are for Cyfra+.

But if it appears not to be as easy.. my best option may be to wait until I take a holiday to see the family =/.
It would just been nice to buy a new receiver, move the card across, change the package online and enjoy HD.

Thanks-you again.

I think that the Cyfra+ card is one that should be able to be used in any multicrypt card slot, like in one of the Technomate HD models with appropriate patch for example.

Someone who has one could maybe confirm/deny. If so, an offical box from feebay shouldn't be a problem.
