...and I'm not talking roses ..
I was lay in my pit just about to go to sleep last night ..cursing the fact that I had to climb ladders every time I wanted to switch from Linear to Circular..
Well For Dxing ..I still will ..but for more general viewing maybe not ..
Just tested my latest creation ..in the rain ...as it always is here ..
The Open T ..
I've long believed that circular signals can be depolarised outside the lnb throat ..So I wondered if I could use this fact in a positive way ..and decided to make an open T plate ..
Just like the standard T but with an open section inside the lnb to allow whatever linear signals manage to enter ..to be received and find their way to the correct probes...but without totally removing the ability to depolarise circular broadcasts..
Well ..it sort of works ..
Not a very scientific test ...but preliminary results show that around 90% of circular polarised signals are depolarised with sufficient gain to make them lock..including 2 of the stronger startimes transponders at 10 East..
signal loss is approx 1.5 to 2 db on circular signals..
So ..the acid test ...could I lock any linear transponders ..?
The answer is yes ..
Certainly some of the stronger ones ...about 40% of my stored channels including the weak transponder/mux ..Band international on 58 West..
Normally 6.8db ..
Drops to 5.5 db ..with the open T in place ..but still locks..
Not so consistent these linear figures ..
Some channels reduce by much more that 4db ..others only 1.5 to 2 db...
A bit hit n miss ..
But looks promising ...but I'll need to experiment some more to find an optimum compromise ..
So I'll have to get a stock of polyethylene cutting boards in to play with..
You'll also notice the cut-out is roughly the right size to take a DOS plate ..when suitable grooves are cut ...
So more experiments to come ..with what I shall call ..the Hybrid T...
My brain hurts ...cuppa T needed I think.
here are a couple of pics to give you an idea what I envisaged.

A little less analogue, and a lot more crap.

The proper way to offer both linear and circular depolarising is with a mechanical feed system and switchable waveguide mechanism costing some £350 for a Ku device.
If you can do something similar with a 50p bit of plastic then great, but remember all those sweatshop staff with files you are putting out of a job.

(weren't you the one that started the thread on obselecense ?)

OOOoooh thats just cruel CH ..
I don't want to stifle innovation ...nor production ...
I simply want materials to be re-cycled properly ...and people to think about their excessive materialistic habits.
Nothing to stop the sweat shops making 50p bits of plastic ...they probably aren't paid anything like the rake off profits the big companies make on retail anyway.
There's the difference ...I'm happy to give away an idea ...not sell it for maximum profit.
;)

...as an addition ...this could _never_ replace a C ku mechanical polarizer ...but could be an additional product for the 'sweat shops' to give away for a bit more money ...with the HV switched C band LNB ..instead of the poxy little plate they _do_ currently supply..
plus ..chances are it will only work with big dishes anyway..

Regards Montafon Guy!

Looks to be a really interesting device Montafon ..
..one which I'd love to get my hands on to experiment with..
Problems I can see ..
Its very expensive ...
It looks heavy ....is it ?
Comes supplied with Panaorama lnb fitted ..
Can you buy it without and fit an lnb of your choice ?

They are out of stock ..so even if I had the cash ...I couldn't get one ..
I'd be very interested in results in use from someone (English speaking ) who has one and can provide answers and technical data ..
Do you own one ?

I own the polariser and LNB without the servo to turn the LNB. Great bit of kit.

The polariser is not that heavy considering it doesn't seem to be putting to much or any strain on my Gibertinis feed arm.

..Now see..thats interesting already ..
I didn't realise the servo rotated the lnb ..rather than rotating the polariser ..
Not immediately obvious from the picture ..
Do you have any info that came with it ..or a link to a pdf perhaps ?

Can the lnbf be swapped out for another brand ..easily Remlap ...or is it designed only to use one type ?

You see my lnb mounting method might cause problems ..as I grip the lnb ..and thus I wonder what is anchored and what actually moves..

Perhaps there is a video out there in youtube land of the servo controlled unit in use ..?

LNB can be swapped for any I just bought it with the Panaroma.

Attached is a PDF I've gotten from AV-Comm about setting it up for circular signals.

More than perhaps mate but its in German:

Excellent ...
Ingenuity at its best.
So I could use it as the front section remains fixed as does the servo mech at the rear ....the lnb is then rotated around the polarizing plate/mech.
A little less expensive and I'd have one ...but then perhaps its sold without the LNB which would make it cheaper..
But wait ...there is still a problem ..
Stock level (0).
Doh!
I remain impressed though..

I don't think it's worth me looking at finding away to adjust the polariser other than manually because all I have is one linear channel on 3E and that comes in anyway.

Totally understand m8 ..
Indeed it would be pointless in your case ...
But it would save me climbing ladders every time I wanted switch from Circular to Linear at extreme west ...and better yet ...if the claims are to be believed almost zero insertion loss..
..so DXing would still be viable for me.
Too damned expensive as is ..but less the lnb ...wellll...just maybe I could survive on beans on toast for a while..

I managed to get the kit at a very good price, I remember you liking the post when it was sold.

I could never afford it at retail.

I remember it m8 ..and yes I figured it was a good buy ..but didn't realise it was sold with a servo option to rotate the lnbf..
I wonder was yours complete ...or just the feed without the servo ?

I am not sure how it was originally purchased, but I know you can buy separately from satshop24 without the servo and direct from AV-Comm.

I've noticed that satshop24 has swapped his LNB to the Zinwell which has great reviews and very reasonably priced in Australia.

Well ..assuming you can buy the parts seperately ..presumably without an lnbf ..then perhaps I'll drop them an email ..to see if/when the servo kit will be back in stock.
Just hope they don't answer in German ..or I'm stumped.

Although it doesn't directly say it's either Zinwell or Trisat just a photo.

Thank you very much for the photos.

How is it compared to the Star Sat?

The site offers no online ordering I think
