Shes had technical problems in the past - only 4 Ku band tps operational since 2003:
Thaicom 3
Operator: Shin Satellite
Manufacturer: Alcatel Space
Model: SpaceBus 3000A
Launched: 16 April 1997
Orbit: Geostationary
Shin Satellite on 7 February 2003 announced that its Thaicom-3 satellite experienced "an anomaly in its power system." This has caused temporary outages in some of the customers' services, the company said in a brief statement. Reportedly, the root cause of the failure is a short circuit in the solar array drive mechanism.
Thaicom 3 has 14 Ku-band transponders
but only four have been functioning since the outage, the Bangkok Post reported. The transponders are used by pay-TV broadcaster United Broadcasting Corporation (UBC), which is now contemplating how to compensate subscribers. According to an unnamed source at UBC cited by the Bangkok Post, Shin Satellite has not been able to say how long it would take to restore full services.
On 12 September 2004 (local Thailand time), the satellite experienced an outage of at least 12 hours. Shin Satellite in a filing with the Stock Exchange of Thailand said the company "decided to turn off temporarily the transponders on its Thaicom 3 satellite in order to recharge the batteries while performing maintenance during the eclipse."
A report in The Nation newspaper indicated, however, the satellite lost attitude and went into safe mode.
Equipped with 25 C-Band and 14 Ku-Band transponders, the satellite has a life expectancy of 14 years. Total on-board power is 5.3 kW.
