Put the beers in the fridge, put your feet up and get ready for the biggest contest Premiership football has seen in a long time. The countdown has most certainly begun as BT and Sky fight to become the ultimate place to go, to watch all the live action from the Barclays Premier League 2013/14. This is certainly a derby not to be missed. Not two media providers that normally go hand in hand but BT is fighting hard against Sky with the launch of their BT Sports channels this Thursday. Over a year ago, BT wasn’t even a contender in the world of sports broadcasting but they have tackled Sky in the finals and scored the best goal of the season as they win the rights to showcase Premiership games. This is a win that will go down in history. John Petter, Head of BT’s Consumer Division is absolutely thrilled. Sky potentially underestimated the potential BT had in winning this fight. On top of claiming a share of rights to broadcast Premiership games they also managed to get their hands on the main deal breaker! BT will have the right to broadcast the top football match on a massive 18 weekends out of 38. It has also gained the rights to broadcast women’s tennis, Aviva rugby league and others. This is certainly impressive, but if that was not enough, just over ten weeks ago BT announced that this channel would be available to its customers for free. Not all customers of BT however will have access; this is dedicated for broadband subscribers only. This is most definitely a big blow to Sky who charges a monthly fee for their subscribers to benefit from watching the latest sporting action. Only two weeks ago, BT also won alongside the BBC to broadcast FA Cup games. The next agenda item for BT is the option to broadcast UEFA Champions League. However once again Sky is not going to give up this fight and will try hard to defend this title. So how is BT going to manage to compete with some of the biggest media broadcasters currently available? For starters they have built an impressive futuristic style TV studio in the centre of London. Based in London’s Olympic Park, BT have even managed to sign up some of the biggest names in sport, including channel four presenter Claire Balding, Jake Humphrey and Lawrence Dallaglio. As can be expected, BT is very excited about showing BT broadband customers what they have to offer over the forthcoming months. BT has most certainly been the slow horse in the race but this underdog is set to become one of the hottest seats in sport this season. The race is certainly not over yet though as the big media four (Sky, BT, TalkTalk and Virgin Media) continue to fight to find the winning formulae to secure customer loyalty. This winning formulae consists of releasing ever-growing media services and new bundled as well as high investment.
