Back in the day I was privvy to what may or may not be an urban legend ....about a guy who lived not far from the Radio 2 long wave transmitter who wound a coil around his house and used that coil to generate voltage at resonance sufficient to light his house ..
When he turned on those lights ...there was a noticeable drop in radiated power from the Radio 2 LW transmitter ..
This may be just a myth of course ...but there is no reason it wouldn't work ..
Nice..

I know a guy that had some 750 KVA power lines running though his property, (this was in a rural area) he strung some wire up on poles just off the power line right of way and ran his house on the leakage from these lines.

I don't remember how long a run of wire he used but it was a lot, with about a dozen poles, one big air transformer.

The power company tried to sue him but the judge ruled in his favor as the poles were on his property, the judge also told the power company that if they tried this again he would make them move the power lines, this would have cost millions so they dropped it.

Thanks Mr Tesla

  1. A current that runs through a wire creates a magnetic field around that wire. An alternating current in a wire creates an electromagnetic field around that wire.

  2. Yes, you can capture that electromagnetic field. This is how an antenna works: The signal is sent by having an alternating current run up and down the antenna, and the resulting field can then induce a current in another wire (the receiving antenna). You could, theoretically, use that current to light a bulb or some such thing.

  3. So in principal you could use that to receive and store power. I believe that this is what Nikola Tesla had in mind when he wanted to find a system that could transmit energy wireless.
Two things, however. First, the EM field doesn't come for free. You'd still need the power plant to generate the alternating current. Second, this method of transmission is very inefficient. To receive any appreciable amount of power, the initial signal/current has to be ridiculously high. Think about it this way: Your microwave takes current from the wire and converts it into EM radiation to cook your chicken. Now imagine you wanted to send the same power to the microwave via an EM field. That field would need to have at least the same power as the one you put in your chicken, but that'd mean you'd cook everything else around you too :)

Is it possible to get energy from electrical wire using induction?

Bit tongue in cheek observation :-doh

The Fry's electronics in Fremont California has a working 1/4 scale Tesla coil based on his original designs, we would scream when they would power it up for a demo, we were about 20 miles away from them as the crow fly's, it would totally disrupt the video sync signals on out systems, we had to get the FCC involved and they had to put a very large Faraday shield around it, that fixed the problems with that.

But you could hear it miles and miles away on your AM radios even with the shielding in place.

I you slapped a long wire on that I think you could wipe out most long wave short wave signals world wide.

Here it is with the shielding.

It is very impressive when it's on.
