65 years ago a little old lady from Wisconsin who had worked in and around her family dairy farms since she was old enough to walk, with hours of hard work and little compensation, read an advertisement offering $5,000 for the best slogan to advertise the new canned milk sensation called Carnation Milk that became available in grocery stores all over the USA in the 1940s.

The marketing team were concerned that this new canning technique may not be accepted by consumers hence they decided to promote it using the competition. They wanted a rhyme beginning with 'Carnation Milk is best of all.' She thought to herself, I know everything there is to know about milk and dairy farms so I figure I can do this!

She sent in her entry, and several weeks later, a black car pulled up in front of her house.
A large man got out, knocked on her door and said,
"Ma'am, The president of Carnation milk absolutely LOVED your entry.....
So much, in fact, that we are here to award you $1,000 even though we will not be able to use it for our advertisements!"

He did, however, have one printed up to hang on his office wall.

Now Snopes says that the competition was false and indeed offer an alternatively worded entry,

Carnation milk is the best in the land;
Here I sit with a can in my hand –
No tits to pull, no hay to pitch,
You just punch a hole in the son of a bitch.

But I still like the sentiment of both, having myself written a long standing slogan back in 1978 that is still in use today although no credit was ever attributed to me.

I entered a competition in a girly mag in 1978 (Playboy I think) and did not win, the winning slogan lasted but three weeks and then mine was adopted, I think I posted a letter once on the forum about this, from the UK marketing company that is still drawing royalties on it's use. I will have to have a look and see if I still have a scan of the letter where the promo company claim my entry was predated by an American advert which is absolute rubbish especially as it was not possible to see American TV in the UK in those days.

Not a bean, in fact they will not even recognise that it was my entry insisting it came from the USA
