My Satellite Setup
Freesat using Sky dish and LG TV
My Location
isle of wight
Hi,
I'm new to this satellite setup and I'm trying to get Freesat with a standard Sky dish and LNB and an LG TV with a satellite input. I set up the dish using a Satlink WS-6933 finder and I set the unit up to detect the Astra 2 satllite but the first problem I encountered was I could get 99% signal but the quality never budged off 0%. Any Ideas?

Thinking it might be a glitch in the finder I connected the TV and did an auto search on satellite input which successfully found over 150 channels but when I try to view them I get the correct header '101 BBC London etc.' but a message on the screen says there's no signal.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for your help

You're probably locked onto the wrong satellite, which could be Astra 1, 19.2E, Astra 3, 23.5 E, or a number of other satellites, you need to get the signal quality up.
Try checking with dishpointer.com, put in your postcode, or location, select Astra 2, from the drop down satellite box, zoom in on the map, moving the green icon, to where your dish is located, and check if your dish is pointing in the general direction.

Does your television have the option of selecting other satellites? To see if you're aligned to a different satellite?
You could also try changing your meter to Astra 1, and other satellites, to see if you get a signal quality reading.

Can you take any pictures, of your dish, and upload them to the forum?

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
Another simple thing to try: if there are other dishes around you that are pointed at 28E (almost all are likely to be!) then carefully point yours in the same direction, and at the same angle.

Thanks for your reply. I did use dishpointer.com, and thought I was pointing the dish in the correct direction (using the compass on the iPhone and then realising the proximity to the dish altered the reading!) but I will try what you suggest and switch the meter to Astra 1 and see if it gives a non-zero quality figure.
So there's no problem using the Sky LNB for Freesat? The meter has a number of other settings to change, are there any others I should adjust? I kind of assumed they would all be set correctly when I sellected the Astra 2 satellite.

Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for your reply. I think it's pointing in the same direction but when I'm up the ladder next to mine its difficult to see any others (Ventnor doesn't build houses in a straight line!) but I'll take another look and maybe photograph some others from below to compare to mine.

Can you please post your LG television model number, you should be able to change the satellite, from Astra 2, to various other options, to check if you are on a different satellite.

Yes, the model number is 43UK6470PLC. Purchased from Currys. When it was auto-scanning the channels it said it was using Astra 2 but I didn't set that. If there's a way to change the satellite setting I'll try that but I haven't been through the manual in detail yet and there's a miriad of menus.

There's no problem in using a SKY LNB for Freesat, and viceversa - they (except for some SKY Q LNBs) work the same although they look different. Some of us have even got normal LNBs on SKY dishes - ATM got a Zone 1 dish with a normal LNB getting signals from 30W , and a Zone 2 dish with 2 normal LNBs getting signals from 19E and 28E, even those those LNBs don't quite "cover" the dish faces.

FWIW, if you do find and lock channels on Astra 1 at 19E by mistake then Astra 2 at 28.2E is "left a little bit and down a little bit" as you look along the the dish arm from the dish end towards the LNB!

The correct header (BBC One) appears so it looks as though you are on the right satellite, what other channel names appear in the list ?

LG appear to have the most useless online manuals, but I found a video, of an owner setting up his LG television, in India, is your menu the same?

To check (when the sun shines):
For isle of wight the sun will be exactly in the azimuth-direction of 28.2E (or 28.5E) tomorrow at 10:50 UTC, so 11.50 Local time I guess.
(see Satellite Look Angle Calculator )

When you put some tape or a string from the middle of the LNB to the top middle of the dish, at 10.50 UTC the shadow of that line should lie exactly at the middle of the dish arm.

When you say you are using a standard Sky LNB, did you buy it on ebay, how many outputs does it have, as thinking it may be a wideband if you bought it recently.

I only clicked through a few as it gave me the same message but definitely BBC Two and ITV HD

Yes similar except that when it came to the option to 'Select satellite service provider' only 'Freesat' came up and I selected it and then it defaulted to Astra 2

BTW: At what F, SR and Pol did you get signal strength but no signal quality on your WS-6933?
(I notice that it is shown on the screen, and that you also can choose other transponders.)

Still think you've got the wrong bird.....

You are probably right. Unfortunately I'm not on the island ATM so I will try repositioning when I'm there and report back the results. Thanks for everyone's help. I'll report back once I can get up the ladder and mess with it again
