I was scratching my head for a few minutes on this one, the SF8008 from TJ, but I suppose any 4K receiver will do the same.

Playing around with the video settings on a friends UHD monitor, I found I could prefect the picture quality from the box by changing the video output in the menu from 'automatic', to 'all resolutions', and spent a few hours looking at various 4K offerings from both Youtube and satellite.

When I returned home last night I put the box back on the satellite system and couldn't get a picture beyond the image start up screen, no menus, just a blank screen.
The receiver had not locked up since I could turn the receiver on and off, but nothing else would function. Tried three HDMI cables with no change. I thought the image had failed and was in the proicess of looking for the USB stick, which I had left in the back of the trusty old Technika (40") pulled from a skip years ago.

Just by chance I put the cable into the back of the TV and there was a message on the screen with the words 'not support', though without the receiver menus available changing anything back was impossible.

Eventually realised the channelbuttons were also functional, so down one to Ary Digital (from Astra UHD) brought up the picture and menus, allowing reverting back to the disabled video setting. I doubt I would have found out it was the forced 2160 frame of the channel causing the blank screen (and no audio).

Sitting in the corner with the dunce hat at the moment. :-doh

Can the SF8008 be made to only use resolutions found in the displays EDID?

Had a similar problem with a computer monitor. I lent someone one of mine, when they eventually bought one of their own it wouldn't work, other than showing the boot screen. Turned out my monitor supported a higher colour depth that the new monitor refused to accept.

I had the same problem with my AXAS receiver.
EDID is normally there to avoid exceeding the limits of TVs.
The 'all resolutions' function simply disables the TV's EDID return and if the resolution selected on the receiver is not compatible with the TV or does not completely follow the 4K standard (as with HDMI CEC problems), you lose the picture and sound.
Between two Sony TVs, a KD-65XF7596 and a KD-65XG8096 bought a year later, the new one accepts more 4K standards or more standard errors...

Whilst the SF8008 is currently out on loan, the ZGemma here has four video settings in the Egami menu. Simple, native, all resolutions and only HD.

Default is 'simple', though all options have the hint 'output resolution of the box will try to match the resolution of the video contents resolution'. :-wow

I'm not going to change it.

You can also change the resolution via the webif if you do find yourself in the position where you have selected an option the tv doesn't support.

Update and a win.

I bid on a 4k Blu-Ray player at the beginning of the week, with an apparent picture fault. When it arrived I was able to connect to a decent monitor and find that a previous user had set the resolution to 4K only, possibly to ensure it was only providing full output to whatever he was connecting it to.

So, one happy bunny with an up to date player for £25.
