This could be an interesting development!

Al Jazeera Sports is to bid for the rights to broadcast the English Premier League in both the Arab world and on a pay per view basis in the UK, according to football publication Goal.com.

The Doha based satellite network is reportedly seeking exclusive rights to show Premier League matches across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) when overseas bidding for the 2013-14 season begins.

In more of a surprise, Goal.com also claims Al Jazeera is considering entering the UK premium sports market, where broadcast rights to Premier League matches are currently shared between Sky TV and ESPN.

Certainly could be an interesting situation. Whether the net result will be cheaper viewing is the real question.

If that happens i wonder if the fa will force them to use 7west.

I dont think they would win all the rights Sky will just over bid, they have already paid too much for the rights anyway in my opinion.

I can however see espn having a go for more matches.

I just wish the fa would go the same way as spain, germany, italy etc and have all matches shown on tv, obivously there would be a cost involved. Sky italia do a season ticket for serie a matches.

Funded by the Royal Family so won't they be able to match/beat Sky? Interesting to say the least

To Be honest, I hope they do beat sky to the rights (or at least some of them) and I hope that ESPN get more games too, that coupled with the murphy ruling and Brits going out and buying cheap Nova and Tring subs to watch the footy at home and the supposed launch of Real Digital might be the begining of the end for the Murdoch empire and sky in the UK (one can only dream I suppose lol)

Real Digital have no chance of making a go of there effort. Track record of the main players is abysmal. Spend more money on suing folk than anything else.

There should be an option to get the fta channels and add some pay channels like sports or film channels.

I would prefer that if it was priced competitively as i have $ky and spend half the time watching discovery channel if no footy on that i'm interested to watch.

Art had the premier league rights which was great but then we soon know how they went.

The FA need to change but wont and move with the times with advances in media like mobiles, internet etc.

Yes, that's the declared intention. But then it's been promised for years and never happened. Strong links to those responsible for Rapture TV and all that entailed. I would not be confident that anyone shelling out for the kit would be able to get long term use out of it.

i have seen that real digital have been testing but do we know if there is any info on receivers, encryption think conax been mentioned somewhere etc otherwise they will fail.

going back to the original topic, can aljazeera pay for the whole rights as havent sky paid something like 1.5billion for the uk rights ?

I do hope they get the rights in the mddle east but surely doubt we would see coverage on hotbird and they would need to go hd like admc have done already so far.

the fa do need to rework the tv rights in the uk as people will still go for european cards to get all matches when they think the blackout at 3-5pm is still workable.

I just wish bsb hadnt failed to see how pay tv would have developed in the last 21 years, there system was better i thought.
