My first foray into satellite was with a BSB Ferguson D-MAC receiver that had been converted to D2-MAC. The complete system including mini-dish cost a bargain £15 from a shop in Southend. After getting it home and pointing the dish in the right direction (using a school protractor and boy scout compass), the picture suddenly cleared to reveal Vanessa Paradis singing "Joe Le Taxi" on the French music channel MCM. I don't know if I was more surprised by the system actually working or the sight of the French teenager's gyrating. The other thing that sticks in my mind was that satellite TV did actually have stripping housewives (on the RTL gameshow Tutti-Frutti). The long-gone Southern TV once ran an ad campaign denouncing the evils of satellite TV saying it would be used to beam stripping housewives into our living rooms and boy were they right!
