William Russell, perhaps better known as Ian Chesterton the first male companion for the Doctor in Doctor Who, has died aged 99. Born William Russell Enoch, he was known as Russell or Russ by his family and friends early in his career but soon dropped the Enoch after a few appearances. His actor son, Alfie (Dean Thomas in the Harry Potter films) , decided to use the family name Enoch for his stage name.

He was in the programme for the first two years (appearing in every episode) but made a cameo appearance as Ian in the 2022 special "The Power of the Doctor". This gave him a Guinness World Record for the longest gap between TV appearances. He had a previous appearance as a BBC Commissionaire in the 2013 docudrama An Adventure in Space and Time about the first episode of Doctor Who.

I'm not going to post a video from Who but instead from his time, seven years earlier, in the lead role as Sir Lancelot. Here's the very first episode.

RIP William
