So ..spotted a Winradio PCI card for sale (used) on fleabay ..
WINRADIO G303i, SDR 9khz-30Mhz, PCI
Now I know these aren't cheap ...
This model has been superseded ...but like the others would probably have cost several hundred when new.
So I put in a throw away bid ...not expecting to win it ...
but I did ..
So ...this unit will cover the missing chunk of spectrum below 30mhz ..
..which SDR dongles dont do natively ....and even Airspy needs a convertor ..
Fingers crossed it has no issues with 64bit Win7 ..
Anyone had experience of these receivers ..?
In particular this model ?
comments welcome..

Well congratulations on winning the bid.
A bit pricy at 145 pounds. I hope you got it for less.
Enjoy.

Yep ..I did win it ..
TBH I dont consider it pricey even at £145 ...as This also includes some high end software ...and postage..
These units start at £500 and go upwards depending on function..
I guess you got to ask yourself ..
What would be an acceptable price for a modern communications receiver for VLF through Shortwave ...?

I'll have to put up a long wire antenna ...and go 'whistler hunting ' at VLF..
Last time I did this was in my teens ..
So ..been a while ..
Certainly was one of the eeriest sounds I ever heard..

Beautiful the way lightning and solar radiation 'rides' the magnetic field lines of mother Earth..

So ..
my winradio has arrived ..
Tricky to install ...but finally got it in ..
Currently listening to 5 Live on 0.909 mhz on LW ..
No proper long wire antenna as yet ...but it is working ..
Problems too with the on board audio card chipset ..
Compatibility ?
Currently have winradio physically linked externally by wire ...but would prefer internal audio piping ..?winradio.jpg
I'm thinking of fitting a creative labs pcie card on the mobo ..
Can you fit more than one at a time or does the onboard chipset have to be disabled ..
Never tried multiple souncards before ...so ...does anyone know if this is ok to do ?

I did win a Yuasu r/t (fully functional) and an Icom unit (with faulty transmitter circuit) a few years back for about the same. 500kHz to 30MHz though.

The main cost to me has been the modification to the garden, addition of posts and the wiring of the three antennas via baluns, more time than financial.

What else comes in below 500kHz of man made origin that can be understood ? (I don't mean the afterlife :) Spooky Tesla Spirit Radio

Nice one CH ..
Well ..It feels good to go back in time ..
Last time I had a decent antenna fof SW LF and VLF was back in the 70s ..
Got my 20mtr long wire up this morning ..
It runs from the corner of my house to a tree at the back of my dads ...
It has a balun in a box ..and optional Earth connection ...which I have also connected to what looks like an old gas main connection sunk into the ground in the back yard ...DSCF0006.JPG
The wire itself is multicore plastic sleeved steel ....and terminates with a supplied insulator ...the loop end curly type ...
This I have connected to an old chest expander spring I had lying around ...the other end of the spring fastened to the tree trunk..
The idea being as the wind blows ..and the tree sways ...the spring will adjust the antenna tension ...
Here are a few pix ...hope you can see the antenna clearly ..

Not sure why you say that, short wave (or at least frequencies from 15MHz upwards) have been used by space agencies for communication. Sputnik had a 20 (.005) MHz oscillator on board for the characteristic 'beep beep'.

Once the plans are in place for long distance mining, autonomous exploration and possibly colonising, I can see that there will be a requirement forexploiting the low frequencies over such long distances, and eventually moving away from electromagnetic communication completely, using the medium of gravity waves, where the speed of light no longer becomes a constraint.

The' Nice one '...was for Your installation..
The Back in time was a reference to the fact that I haven't explored the lower bands since my yoof..

A bit gutted atm ...
I know it's been a long time ...but didn't know they had demolished the MSF ceasium time clock from Rugby ..
60khz ...
I read they replaced it with a setup at Anthorn ?
Where is Anthorn ...anyone...?
Apparently it was demolished and moved circa 2007 ...
I remember well passing acres of masts and antennae back in the day ...when Rugby was active ..
It used to put out 10s of kW ..
So sad ...

Well ..gone from MW to about 12 mhz ..and am pleasantly surprised to see that there are still many broadcast stations using AM in short wave ..
Also found many repeaters or somesuch anouncing themselves in CW ..
Long time since I've used morse ...and need a refresher I think ..
but Found one early on that anounced as BESOV .....and a few that announce as TAH ...
Of course ...I'm clueless as to what these are ..
The last one that anounced as TAH ...is followed by what I can only describe as 4 telephone trills or dial tones ....then TAH is repeated..
..which I guess might make sense as it is located in the Maritime mobile station band @ 12.629mhz
;)
