Advice Needed Problems streaming to laptop

Hi

I´m having problems streaming from my Extrend ET9500 to my laptop using Open Webif and VLC media player.

Seems to work ok on SD channels, but keeps freezing and jumping on HD channels. ( Audio seems ok )
Thought at first it may be a speed issue using the wireless connection from the router ( Linksys WRT54GL ) so I connected the laptop via a cable to the router, same problem. ( Wireless up to 54Mbps. Cable 100 Mbps. )

Now thinking it is either a settings issue, or a buffer issue on the laptop ( Just over 2 year old Packard Bell MS 2384 ) Plenty of space on the hard drive, only 50 of 680 GB used. 8GB RAM with 7.44 currently usable according to system info via control panel

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

If its working fine on SD and not working on HD its probably either a data transfer issue or the processor cant keep up with the amount of number crunching it needs to do.

Thanks AS, just ran some checks streaming SD and HD.
Not streaming CPU 4% usage 0.8Ghz speed
SD 18% usage 1Ghz speed ( up and down a little either way )
HD 50% usage 1.27Ghz speed ( solid on 1.27Ghz )

Max speed according to spec is 1.3Ghz, so I figure it cannot process the data fast enough, as you thought.

Cannot justify a new laptop just for some odd streaming, so guess I´ll have to miss out on the HD stuff:(

Hello, I'd say 50% proc use is ok, will cope fine and only produce a little more heat IMO. But if it's an AMD proc anything can happen :O)

Test the network, maybe laptop is stuck at max 10Mbps. A quick test, a transfer in ftp (or use a browser ftp://yourboxip) and save a recording unto hd, check speed in task manager. Here's a test on a lowly old Intel Celeron laptop I use for some media and streaming, no problems.

The processor is AMD with max speed 1.3Ghz, notice yours is running at 1.67Ghz.
Will try tomorrow to see if I can find a way round it.
Right now Ryder Cup is about to start! Although at the moment it´s hit and miss with the signal.

It could also be that your on board graphics possessor in that laptop can't handle the load, or it may be overheating, or a lack of ram for the graphics processor may be a problem.

Do you have some spec's on the on board graphic's??

OK, I checked on some spec's for that laptop, it looks like it starts at 250 MB on the video graphics memory, but there may be a way to go into the BIOS and set it to a higher level, I don't have any info on that.

That laptop also has a 1 GB LAN input speed, so you may be able to up the router to one that can give your some more poop.

I use a full gigabit LAN system here for security video transfer between PC's, and have never had a drop out on the HD videos at that speed, but did have some problems with the slower 10/100 LAN in some PC's, until I installed a faster 1 GB LAN card in them, then all problems with HD video went away.

Tested with lower proc speed 1.17 ghz, as expected HD's streaming fine on the old Celeron 1000M processor (very low perf. Ivy bridge graphics). Preferred program is MPC HC.

....check your max network speed, get that in or out of the equation :O)

Since it's a dual core, I'd say it's a single threaded codec where one core is exhausted and the other one is doing nothing.
Check your video drivers and codecs. Seems like the laptop is trying to decode the video in software.
Edit: VLC has internal codecs I believe, check settings and for latest version. I'm to no help when it comes to vlc I'm afraid.

After more digging on that laptop I find that it uses "HyperMemory" for the video graphics, it starts at 250 MB, you can go into the BIOS and set this higher,(up to 1408 M:cool: it will cut down on the available system memory but it may help.

Quick question, is it possible to direct connect laptop to STB to bypass the router to see if it makes any difference?

Been into BIOS by hitting f2 on boot, no option to change settings for HeyperMemory.
Info from task manager advised it is an AMD E2 - 3800 APU with Radeon (TM) HD Graphics
Max speed 1.30 GHz
4 core
Hyper-V support : yes
L1 cache 256KB
L2 cache 2.0 MB

As yet, I have not found anywhere to change it.

Running Windows 8.1
