And the final nail in the 3D coffin (again) - Sky 3D is shutting down via satellite later in the year

https://corporate.sky.com/media-centre/our-blog/2015/an-update-on-sky-3d

The move allows them a get out, there simply isn't enough content for a dedicated film subscription package (unless they bought up some additional analglyph stuff).

So, only those that have paid for the kit and want to use thwe feature will actually download it.

The 3D sports market really is going to be a disaster.

Never been a fan of 3D and when I bought my Panasonic 32" last year, wasn't bothered that it wasn't 3D capable.

I really hate the fact that Sky is turning into Netflix... and not a very good one.

For DTH tv HD is good enough for me,
So maybe 4K Ultra HD will be the next thing we find in pubs on 100" LED tv's

4k is the way forward, and thwere are plenty of TVs within reach. The manufacturers will probably consign DVDs and their dedicated recorders to the bin before long, freeing up the shelves for large capacity home media servers.

I wonder when 4K ready satellite boxes will become available incorporating H265 with built in and a very very fast processor,
HEVC hasn't got full hardware acceleration yet from what I have read so far.

Will the Japanese provide inspiration on this, as they appear to be further ahead going into 8k for example.

I don't ever see 8k being made available in homes - probably for event rebroadcasts but it's too much for the average home tv. Surprised the Japanese are into big screens, seeing how little space they have in most homes.

Still, no-one even broadcasts 1080p so I am not sure where the bandwidth will come from for 4k. Hopefully from the pointless +1 and shopping channels.

Theres still plenty of unused bandwidth at 28E. A good proportion of the old "2C band" is still unoccupied.

I suspect most of it would be "backup capacity" rather than used for something useful, like giving out proper bitrates and resolution on ALL channels, instead of blockbuster world.

I think that OLED technology and its better picture quality is more exciting than 4K unless one is going to supersize ones telly...which I would not.

Surely multiple satellites with redundant transponders would be the "backup capacity", the currently unused parts of the band will no doubt be filled up at some point in the future for something or other (probably not 3D though ;) )

Yeah, overcompressed "Ultra HD" channels.
