Antena 3 progresses on DTT

Spanish media group Planeta's Antena 3 TV wants to demonstrate it bets on DTT more than ever through its two DTT channels Antena.Neox and Antena.Nova.

Last month Antena.Neox’s viewing share surpassed, for the first time, Spain’s pay-TV thematic channels. It came in above News Corp.'s Fox and Sony's AXN and at the same time beating its historical audience record with 0.48% of all viewing, or 4.3% of viewing in DTT-equipped homes.

The main Antena 3 channel gets a share of around 17%.

Last year the channel was the most watched of DTT-specific services, with Antena.Nova occupying fourth place.

Antena.Neox will premiere in Spain popular British series Life on Mars which will be exclusively broadcast in DTT. It will also offer some international cinema and sports including NBA basketball matches, all UEFA Cup soccer matches, the Ski World Cup and an extreme sports TV series.

On the interactive side, the channel has just premiered a competition programme running across TV, the internet and mobile phones called Webmaster TV. It will also premiere some programming for young people and children.

On its side Antena.Nova will premiere women’s and lifestyle programming.

Both channels had their biggest own production capacity in 2007 with 32 new in-house productions.

Apart from betting on its digital channels Antena 3 is also betting on broadcasting technology since last year premiered on DTT a new system, Ultra Quality. That, says the company, betters the resolution image quality equalling it to that of a DVD.

Mikel Lejarza, Television Division's CEO for Antena 3 said: "We are a family of channels not a big national generalistic channel and other small and marginal channels". He also stressed that “when digital TV means fragmentation of channels the normal thing is to lose points in audience share but we have taken the opposite step by going up. Also what's happening is it's the segmentation of audiences which is positive for offering specific contents that will be able to attract advertisers who haven't been able to tackle the TV market so far due to high advertising costs".

But the company's idea is not to create thematic channels but generalistic ones. For this purpose it will allocate triple it's last year DTT budget, although management will not give precise figures.

Regarding the possibility of distributing Antena.Neox and Antena.Nova on cable and satellite, Mikel Lejarza said the move would be unlikely due to broadcasting rights. "We don't want to make pay-TV channels with less quality than those we already have in the clear on DTT," he stated.

Antena 3 also has a 24 hour internet news channel Antena 3 Noticias 24 and an international channel for South America, Antena 3 International.
