1N can cover all the frequencies - and I suspect any frequency can be switched to any beam. The EB1 stuff is unlikely to be moved to SES birds though.

I also believe that but where are the days where SES Astra's data sheets listed this up frequency by frequency ? :(

Hypothetical question: what do you think would happen if EB1 were lost, as the most important part of Freesat (the EPG) is carried on 11426.00 H? Do you think SES would be asked to step in, or do you think Eutelsat would be more interested in protecting its corner?

Changes to BBC satellite services on 24 Feb 2012

Satellite operator SES Astra is making a number of changes to its fleet of satellites at the 28.2° East orbital position, serving the UK and Ireland, over the next few years. The first of these changes will take place during February when the Astra 1N satellite, which was launched last summer, replaces the Astra 2D satellite, which is coming towards the end of its life.

The BBC currently broadcasts many of its television and radio services on Astra 2D, so as part of this replacement process BBC services that are currently located on Astra 2D will be moved across to Astra 1N. The services affected are:

  • BBC One (including all National and Regional variants)
  • BBC One HD
  • BBC Two (including all National variants)
  • BBC Three
  • BBC Four
  • BBC HD
  • CBeebies
  • CBBC
  • BBC News
  • BBC Parliament
  • BBC ALBA
  • BBC Radio 5 Live
  • BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra
The migration will be taking place during the early hours of the morning on Friday 24 February, between approximately 03:00 and 05:00 UTC. If you are watching or listening to BBC channels via satellite during this time you may experience some intermittent disruption to service. PVR recordings of BBC programmes made during this time may also be disrupted.

The tuning details used for BBC services on Astra 1N following the migration will be the same as those used today for services on Astra 2D. The signal strength of the new satellite will also be the same or possibly better in some parts of the country. This means that the change of satellites should be invisible to most viewers.

When looking on a spectrum analyser, certainly near the beam's edge All 2D's transponders vary continually up and down by about 1dB every second, this has become more pronounced lately,it used to be more visible on the weaker vertical transponders when they hit their "low point" in the evening but now visible on both H and V all the time here in Portugal

So, it seems that 1N arrived in the nick of time! I wonder if the batteries are failing on 2D?

The batteries are only required twice a year during the eclipse season

It cant be the batteries - see my post above. Maybe one or more of the solar panels is low on output. This would show up as a ripple as the craft spins. (2D being a Boeing 376 spinner craft)

It's weird as I found the signal levels for Astra 2D increased in the new year for me in Finland, giving more reliable 24/7 reception and some extra transponders. Can't tell you what they are like today though as I'm not there at the moment.

Same here.
They are still better now than pre-christmas.
But 1N is still miles better - have had rain- and snow-fade the last couple of weeks on 2D.
1N comes in as if we had no atmosphere.
(Well, ok, at least I have no noticable fade even with cold front and associated snow passed).

I should be more specifc and say hat it's predominantly the signal *quality* that's gone most up, with strength only a bit up.
Haven't measured it with the meter, so I can't confirm which is what right now.

...or maybe it's the whole electronics thing that works better a sub-zero temperatures.
I seem to remember one of our members who tried cooling his LNB with spray-on freon or something to get lower noise floor in the LNB...
