SES have nothing new in build at the moment for European locations, as far as I believe, but guess a candidate would be Astra 5A perhaps?

Actually, funnily enough I've thought that Astra 5A high power beam has a similar pattern to 2G Europe if it's skewed round a bit.

But I assume 2F and 2E could still take some extra load at 28E and one or two of the older Astra satellites could do a few more years yet at a push but it would be probably getting a bit close for comfort. Anyway, maybe we shouldn't worry about this just yet. ;)

Astra 5A failed in orbit in 2009.
Astra 5A [Sirius 2; GE 1E]
SES Astra announced on 16 January 2009 that its satellite Astra 5A, the former Sirius 2 operating at 31.5 degrees East, experienced a technical anomaly leading to the end of the spacecraft's mission.

After control over the spacecraft had been re-established at the beginning of April 2009, the satellite was put into graveyard orbit.

The satellite went physically out of control on 22 October 2008. According to Rapid TV News, the satellite by 5 November 2008 was back at its 31.5 degrees slot and working nominally.

SES said they do not suspect any fundamental technical flaw to be the root cause for the outage, and that they could not rule out an operator error (i.e. human failure).

In April 2008, Sirus 2 (originally a DTH satellite) was relocated to the 31.5 degrees East position and renamed Astra 5A. It was mainly used for feeds to cable headends in Germany and Eastern Europe.

Well, RSCC has already changed plans, Express AM6 after launch, gonna be fully operational at 53E.

Express AM22 or Sesat 2 (has been repeatedly reported malfunctions during operation of this spacecraft) will emigrate at 80E, to operate there until 2018, and if everything goes fine, she will be replace by "Express 80".
Othertwise will move for support "Express AM-33", which is currently at 96.5 ° East and is scheduled for replacement in early 2018.
Express AM7 (40.0° E) launch is scheduled for early 2015, and later of the next year launch is scheduled for Express AM8 (14° W) .

Yes, the European beam reaches southern Finland!! Now what are the chances this satellite crashes and burns or the European beam is never used for anything interesting... :-ohcrap (I am slightly worried as on paper* the 2G European beam does not appear to be as strong as 2F and 2E in the outer areas of the UK)

(*OK, actually the SES iOS app)

Was Astra 1KR replacement a standby backup or originally intended to be another satellite such as 1L?

It was a replacement for the failed Astra 1K but could easily be used at another location as Astra 1L/1M & 1N have enough transponders to cover 19.2 east.

110 active transponders @ 19.2 east with the current 4 satellites they have
Astra 1KR=32 Ku-band transponders
Astra 1L = 29 Ku-band transponders,
Astra 1M = 32 (+4) Ku-band transponders
Astra 1N = 55 Ku-band transponders
= 152 transponders available so if you move Astra 1KR you would have 122 transponder,
But I cannot see this happening the current 4 satellite will stay @ 19.2 east,

1KR replaced 1G & 1L replaced 1H I think.

I presume 1KR was precurred after the loss of 1L? Guess that took a few years?

Don't you mean 1K?
Is Astra 2C available to take up some slack if needed at this stage?

Oh of course, forgot all about 2C! I'm pretty sure it would be used if one of the others starts to fail.

Yep, my mistake, yep 1K it was.

Forgot all about 2C, she's available to assist but only covers limited spectrum.

Yes, if 2C is needed then there would need to be some major reshuffling to get the working satellites away from 2C's limited bands.
