SES has renewed a multiple transponder contract with the BBC. The capacity, a total of six transponders, has been contracted on a long term basis and will be used for services in both standard and high definition. The capacity will be hosted on the SES satellites positioned at the orbital position 28.2 degrees East. SES is currently undertaking a large fleet investment programme at that orbital position.

Analoguesat, or any UK resident please enlighten me, just can't believe the priorities in the UK!

Is it really true, soon there will be 4 HD channels carrying 90% of the time the SAME programming of BBC 1, in separate streams?
And also there will remain 4 SD programmes of BBC 2, ALSO carrying the same programming 90% of the time?

What an in-cre-di-ble waste of bandwidth, and then BBC whines about not being able to give their radio stations a decent bitrate???

Yup, absolutely true.

No, regional versions of BBC2 will disappear, probably before the conversion of BBC HD into BBC2 HD.

Well, if Scotland goes independent then maybe we can axe on of those "wasteful" streams? ;)

@PaulR, that´s good that just one version of BBC 2 remains, somehow did not get that message.
Zapping through mostly equal programmes isn't a great experience!
I suppose by that time, we can expect more hours of different programming, between the four countries´ BBC 1.

@timo_w2s, looking at Germany´s third public TV stations, it would only seem logical each UK country has its own one (independant or not).
Only joining during national news. But then, quite a few of Germany´s third programmes are circulating between them.

Thanks for the replies!

The announcement that BBC2 regions would disappear was made some time ago as part of the cost reduction procedure. It wasn't specifically tied in with BBC2 HD and it is possible that there will be BBC2 regions still transmitting when BBC2 HD goes live but I doubt it.

As I (still!) only have a single LNB input to my Foxsat HDR it often provides an alternative BBC1 to record from when I'm recording something else at the same time which clashes with my local area BBC1.

Yuip there will be 4 HD streams for BBC1 - one for each nation. Norn Ireland is already on air.

As for BBC2 I suspect the long term strategy is to shut the extra ones down.

They could use dynamic PMT if BSkyB did update their system to make it capable of supporting that standard DVB-S feature...
