I have not found the Octagon SF8008 (Linux) to be a very slow box.
If you use the Open ATV image on an Ocatgon SF8008 you have fast blind scan, it can capture low symbol rates and it allows the user to select the frequency range, the polarity and the SR range.
Personally, I have found the OpenViX images coupled with the Simple Ten Eighty skin to be user friendly on linux boxes.

With respect to very low symbol rates, what values do you consider very low and what currently produced satellite receivers are capable of detecting signals with these very low values?
As far as I am aware, the best two receivers for this are possibly the GTMedia Combo (android) and the Octagon SF8008 (linux)?
However, there are possibly other satellite receivers I am not aware of that are capable of very low symbol rates?

I do not know of any currently produced android box or closed source box that can match the SF8008 options for selection of frequency range, polarity and SR range.
The older closed source receivers used to allow selection of frequency range, polarity and some functionality for selection of the SR range.
As for Technomate, I am not sure how many of their fan boys are left standing after the launch of the TM-5402 (M4)?

Personally, for blind scanning my hardware of choice is a Dr HD F15 receiver, a TBS6983 card and an Octagon SF8008.
The Dr HD F15 receiver and the TBS6983 card (with EBSPro v18, CrazyScan and DVB Dream) can indicate signal levels below a lock level, a useful option if the DX Man is without an analyser.
Hey mate. @moonbase. What makes u think there is a difference between openvix and openatv re blind scan performance. Aren't they all using the same @Huevos implementation of a blind scan. ?

But u are right the octagon sf8008 is very good, not slow and maintains a lock when others like my edision mio4k doesnt at marginal signal levels

I scanned 95.0W using different Octagon SF8008 receivers at the same time, one with an Open ViX image on it and the other with an Open ATV image on it.
The SF8008 with Open ATV on it scanned in and locked more frequencies.

95.0W was a good test as it had daily narrow bandwidth frequencies very close together with low SR. Typically, SR of 1036 and bandwidth of 1.3MHz. Sometimes these were separated by frequency intervals of 2MHz or less.
I also tested an Edision MIO on the same satellite and it performed absymally with these type of signals. On other stuff such as 16APSK feeds with higher SR and wider bandwidth from 95.0W the MIO came good.

I wonder why the difference between Open Vix and Open ATV on the Octagon? I am using OpenVix on the SF8008. I have used Open ATV in the past but found it wasn't fully translated into English at the time and I liked the signal readouts per channel on OpenVix, but that may be different now. I also have the Mio but preferred the low Symbol rate ability on the Octagon. The only thing is I miss the way better remote on the MIO than the sticky plasticy keys on the Octagon!

Dusted off the Icecrypt S6600HD just blind scanned 16E and it picked a Dutch radio mux up at 11.069H SR355. I think Sky Radio languishes very close by too. No other receiver I have will blind scan a SR this low...sure we have this discussed before. A pity the software wasn't developed further...20220724_113523.jpg

i would have carried on using it, if it wasnt for the crashing on blind scan (30w for example) - i read somewhere these were used in cinemas? wtf.

Although not a receiver, but a PC-card: tbs6909x and tbs6903x can also decode this low bandwith mux:

S6600 was a fantastic receiver, maybe better than TM6902.
I lost one some years ago, did not bought immediately and it was gone.
I think that it was used by the BBC too.
Unfortunately it finished and was not replaced by a newer model with similar specs. Bad luck.

What was it crashing on? A particular transponder for example? I will try mine. I'm sure this one I have had the last sw release loaded..

if I understand.
taking only the demodulators still on sale.
GTMEDIA GT COMBO 4.2.2 on Android
OCTOGON SF8008 under Linux (OpenATV)
Another ?

For PC cards it seems to me that the TBS5520SE is the right compromise in the same price range.
What do you think ?

yes, and it took some searching too to find it from memory - gave up trying to get SOFTCAM working - although there is an EMU OSSIE SOFTIE CAMERA available for the chipset
