Can somebody please tell me which is the best cable to use from my dish to receiver. The cable run is around 25 mtrs. Oh and whilst I'm on about cable runs does anyone one know what the insertion losses are for an in-line joint?

Your losses will be minimal for a 25Mtr cable run @ 2Ghz

Best for a continuous run but if not possible then an F type in-line coupler will be fine.

Cable required would be double screened copper / copper ie. wf100, tx100, ph100 etc. Most of these cables are benchmarked.

I have tested cables of various quality. Price starting from $0.08/meter to $3/meter. I can 100% say - at such a not so long distance, if everything else is done and cable does not have physical damage, any RG6 cable will work ok, for 25m distance.

RG6 is only rated up to 1Ghz.... technically it will work but would strongly recommend what was previously suggested as per the industry standard here in the Uk

The cost differential between the cheaper RG6 and the benchmarked cables would be neglible for a 25m run.
What you have to consider is that if you want to add more components, such as a Diseqc switch, motor, face plate, loop through etc, these all add that little bit of attenuation, best to maximize your margin, and go for the decent stuff, for the sake of a pint of beer the cheap stuff's not worth getting.

It's not all about signal loss.
Screening factors for impulse noise, SWR and EMC to name three.

WF100 CT100 etc are RG6 cable wf100 ct100 pf100 etc are just marketing names for rg6 cable with copper core copper braid and copper shield:)

They started using these stupid marketing names like ct100 for dumb ass sky installers a few years back, Ever where else in the world it is know as rg6 you can get RG6 but in different grades

Well be that as it may, but in the UK, if you are offered RG6 cable, it is normally one of two grades, cheap and nasty, or cheaper and nastier.

The branding of cable is not restricted to the UK, it is at least Europe wide and I find it useful, as I have my preferences on both performance and usability.

High frequency goes on conductor's surface - so thickness of braiding and diameter of central wire affect mainly DC resistance, which can have impact on voltage delivered to LNB via that cable, but much less impact on RF signal.

I would go for WF125 if the cable run is reasonably straight (no awkward bends, as it's rather inflexible).

Added to that, it stands up well to weathering over time - polyethylene outer cover as opposed to PVC used on WF100 etc.

At 25 metres there should be really no issues with most cables, more problems may manifest themselves with
1)How well the connectors are fitted
2) If the cable is kinked in any way
3) Running cheaper cable near other cables (ie mains supplies)
4) DECT phones
5) the usual installer issues - nails/staples etc

wf100 or wf125 will be ok for 25metre run as that rg6 over here is rubbish quality unless it is the copper braid/foil one as mentioned earlier

FWIW - Ive got tens of metres of coax running up and down the garden round the house etc and for the strong Euro sats I use the ultra cheap stuff you get from B&Q. It works fine :D

I wouldnt use it where I wanted every last bit of signal on the weak sats, but for 19E 13E etc it works lovely. Ive even got a couple of lengths where the outer sheath got split when it got caught - a bit of duck tape round it waterproofs it perfectly. Theres an 8 way disecq switch screwed to the fence with a plastic bag over it to waterproof it......

What with bent second hand dishes, zip tied lnbs, switches and joins in the cables and the cheapest nastiest coax cable available my sat kit probably shouldnt work at all :-rofl2
