Ahh right Landlord left nothing like that, so will have to buy one

It's more then likely in one of his junk boxes or a "Whats this thing do?" drawer, or the last tenant took it with him.

LOL! it was the actual owner of the house (who lived here before we moved in) who took it, when we rang the estate agent they got in touch and they said it was a booster, it just so happened I had one and hooked it up and nothing, so bought a internal aerial with booster on it and got me 4 channels.

Thank you very much, I'll talk with the house mates to see if they are happy about the situation and go from there

If the first pre-amp in line is not working or not getting DC power it will act as a very big attenuator and you wont get much even with a second amp on the line, look at the power supply Satelliteman posted, connect it up and the amp (if its still in good shape) should work as expected.

Who said anything about having a second amp on the line?

I was told that a booster was needed (for the aerial on the roof) I hooked a booster up and it did nothing. so I bought an internal aerial (with booster integrated) and have been using that instead of the roof aerial. I know I don't know much about how TV transmission work but yeah I understand if you try and boost a signal that isn't there adding a second booster will do nothing.

I have looked at the power supply satelliteman showed me and ordered it before house-mates agreed (If they dont wanna pay, if it works they dont get to watch TV >:) )

Thank you all that have helped me and I will let you know what happens when it arrives :)

A booster is an amplifier.

If the first one on the roof isn't being supplied with power then it actually stops the signals getting through so the secomd amplifier (booster) has nothing to amplify/boost. It's what I said, in another way, about you not getting any signals off the back of the aerial because the roof amplifier isn't working.

Great result. It's just a damn shame that the previous power supply was taken.
