Im glad that this disaster is turning into a success story, im enjoying reading it ! i used a plastic pot lid from one of mrs pm's maintenance products to cap the top of my 3" pole i needed a flush fitting cap to allow the mount to sit squarely, i used silicon sealer to fix it inside the pole.

Intersesting cap Purplemarina.
Its possible the same pot lid might fit in my pole ..which also needs to be flush and no lip or overhang ..
Since I'm using a thicker walled pipe ...its internal diameter has to be in the region of 3 inches ..
Which product ?

The fill pipe/vent on my Heating Oil Tank has a push on plastic cap which may be around the diameter needed ........ you can't have mine, but something of that ilk might be just fine and dandy.

Edit: but it would overhang by the thickness of the plastic, so forget that.

Back to the vino collapso.

Edit: On third thoughts, maybe one might fit inside, retained in the same way purplemarina reports - a bit like a ginagorous bathplug.

No real reason why you couldn't simply seal the top with a piece of metal from a catfood tin, or similar.

LOL, I used a front shock absorber cover from (I think) my old morris mini-van. Fits perfectly on top of my 3" pole :)

I cant remember which product it was (she has so many, needs!) i just went through all the cupboards in the house looking for a top that would fit. at the worst you could search the supermarket for something with a top of the right size.

Thanks for the various suggestions ..
I had in mind something more like the old fashioned paint tin lid ..
as in the picture ..
perhaps there is something similar on newer 'tins' ...but in plastic rather than metal..

Ive got a pipe up on the side of the house for my mini weather station. I sealed the top with a plastic mushroom type groundsheet peg holding it in place with LOTS of gaffer tape. Its lasted a few years so far with no problems :D

Yes its another Mr Botchit fix :D

Hi friends ..
Will the wind ever drop ..
Doh ..
Itching to get outside and dismantle my dish but the weather gods say otherwise ..
Instead I'm sat here drawing diagrams ..
Here's a simplified one showing why I cant use a lipped cap and how once fitted the cap becomes inaccessible..

Well ..she's down ...
The mount and the dish have been removed and now occupy significant floor space in my house ..
Tomorrow I shall disconnect the 2 actuators from their respective wiring so they too can be brought indoors ..
Then its a clean up job ..
lift 2 flagstones ...dig down 2 foot ready for the new pole foundation ..
2 T brackets will then be wall mounted to support the new pole vertically ...whilst the surrounding concrete is poured and hardens ..

I'll take a couple of photos of the dish and mount tomorrow ...
The mount will be of particular interest to Nelson ..
lots more to do after that ...including rust killing and repainting ...
Dish checking and realignment etc ..
But I'm relatively happy with progress so far
I ache all over so its off for a hot bath then a good nights sleep for now ..

Excellent progress, VS.

Like life's other tribulations, these seemingly disastrous interludes seldom last and you seem to have got the bit firmly between your teeth.

(Better, though, to use a chuck than to risk damaging teeth)

Thanks for the continued encouragement ..
I do need bolstering up occasionally ..as my mood often dips to an all time low.

Not that I would make any kind of comparision to one my all time heroes..Johannes Kepler..

..but he too had his downtime mood swings when things weren't going the way he hoped..
..but like him I refuse to give in to adversity..

I know theres no comparison :)
but my admiration for what he achieved even when faced with defeat is unwavering.
Poetical and hero worship interlude over ..
I'm retiring early for some much needed ZZZZzzzzs now ..
In fact ..I think thats just inspired me to re-watch another man I admire ..
Carl Sagans Cosmos hasn't had an airing in a while..
g'nite folks..

Four Channels ?

As many as that?

You must be really rather young.

Relatively.

Were they 625 line or 405 ???

...Doh..
Guilty m'lud..
I'm sad enough and old enough to remember the 405 line days ..not quite bbc only..but 2 channels
Granada and BBC in black and white..
The addition of UHF 625 lines ..
The addition of BBC2
The First colour transmission on BBC2
and the shutting down of VHF 405
The addition of CH4 ..and the first person ever seen on that channel
The very sexy Carol Vorderman ..who got sexier with as she got older..
And the eventual carnage that was the digital switchover ..
which still gives problems in my area..
Thats just my terrestrial lifeline..
..then there's sat...blah blah ..drone ...drone..

At least for now anyway ..
Not content with pulling down my big dish ..
The weather gods have a firm grip on my other 2 dishes and are furiously trying bring 'em down to earth this morning ..
Yes ...the high winds and powerful gusts are back with a vengeance this morning ..
Whats left of the 1.8 is now safe indoors ..but the TD110 and the 90cm are still exposed.
doh!
:(

Many thanks Montafon ..
That is a very kind offer ..
As you say its a long way from here to Austria ..
Nice to know they still exist around the world ..and haven't all been scrapped along the way ..
I suspect I may well be able to ressurect my Alcoa ...providing the dish itself isn't bent out of shape ..
The heavier Polar mount appears to have survived without damage ...but If I do need parts at least I know you have some .
I suspect it would cost a small fortune to ship them but nonetheless I am grateful for your offer.
