Eumetsat access licences now free

Good news if you want to access the meteosat weather images from Eumetsat. The basic access licences for download of the data are now free.

@Analoguesat , I couldn't find those visible wavelength images. here are the available sections.. Is it in DataCenter? i checked data center section but couldnt find any

These stunning colour images can be found on thee too (the clouds are blue as its an "uncorrected" image - the corrected ones are available too). Cropped again as the file size is far too large to post here, but this is full size

According to the current technical bulletin the decryption dongles (which were over £100 each) are now also free, so you can get the DVB-S2 data direct from the Eute 10A for just the cost of the satellite hardware now. I shal look into this once the weather starts improving. Much more data is available from Eute 10A than is from the website - some of the American Goes images plus Himawari8 which is over Japan, and the higher res NOAA polar birds images. Plus lots lots more.

I should check my MSG-1 Groups - groups.io emails maybe more frequently. it was there, members are already talking about it.

Todays Eumetsat offering from the website 1200utc. Ive tinkered with screengrabs & resizing & cropped the 20mb image to get it to show the whole of Africa at a sensible size

So ...a couple of questions ..
Do you have one of these free dongles ?
..and where does one apply ..?(direct link would be good)
I am sadly still getting my weather images via NOAA birds with my QFH ...

Having moved my Helical L-Band antenna to a USALS setup ..I now have a vacant fixed 60cm dish ..
Is this sufficiently large ?

Not yet VS, but there are reports of them being delivered fairly quickly by lads on the Facebook page Ive been following. Its 10E so 60cm is probably a bit undersized.

Sadly I am going round in circles on the Eumetsat site..
So no idea how to go about 'getting involved'.
or indeed where to order from.
They dont make it obvious...and I dont do social media in any way..
I would assume its ku ..and I'm not short of dvb cards ...
my assumtion rightly or wrongly ..is a standard ku lnb on a dish pointing at 10 degrees ...with a suitable PC and the right software & dongle would get me up and running.
perhaps someone whos done this already can walk me through it..

I'll ask some questions & fill in the info here as to how to sign up for the dongle & s/w.

Standard Ku - 11263H & 11387H are the 2 frequencies, different data is disseminated on each channel although I cant remember whats on which one - its on the Eumesat site as Ive seen it not too long ago.

Look up "EO PORTAL" online. Register an account there, go to licence ordering and order a EKU

I have now an account at EO PORTAL ..but there is no link to anything about licenses or EKU ..
either it is no longer available ..or buried so deep in a subsection I cannot find it..

why do they make these things so difficult..??

Ah here we go. Log intro Eumetsat portal. Then its under the following My Data Access - Eumetcast Satellite tab. (Middle left on the pic) Fill in in which data you want and then it'll ask for address etc

5 minutes from start to finish Ive just signed up - now I will have to think about the equipment

I did navigate to my data licenses ...but it didn't give me any options such as ordering etc ..
just licenses already granted ???
and nothing about dongles ..nor requests for address etc ..
unless this process is automatic when I opened an account ..

Lets go theough this step by step

Go to Welcome to EUMETSAT — EUMETSAT

Click on Earth Observation portal & log in / set up a new account

That takes me to the My Data Access page

Before I signed up the Eumetcast Satellite tab had subscribe under it I clicked on that - that takes you to 2 further tabs - Europe Ku-band & Africa C-band

I clicked on Ku of course. You can see the difference between being subscribed & already subbed here as I havent signed up for C-band



First time through you now get to choose your data services (all of them probably!) - a couple of them are only for certain users so if you get an error you can back up deselect the two or three it doesnt like then carry on. Once you have ticked the boxes you get theb option to put your address details in.

..even the training channel ..lol

I guess it would be helpful if the package options weren't so complex..

I unticked the MDD & BMD boxes & didnt bother with training channel. It let me have the rest - Once I get it up and running I may well scale back the number of channels Im receiving - the data dissemination is said to be pretty hefty with everything coming in (multi GB in an afternoon)

To be honest I suspect most of us wont want much more than the weather pics - sea level info probaly wont be of much interest to your avaerage enthusiast!
