Taut World War II drama, starring Virginia McKenna and Peter Finch, reflecting the experience of the generation of Australians that fought the war against the Japanese. Jean Paget is among a group of women trapped in Malaya who are forced to walk hundreds of miles in search of food and shelter by the Japanese army. But Australian soldier Joe Harman sneaks food to them from his labour camp. After the war, Jean visits Joe in his home town of Alice Springs, but finds that her life is none too easy.

15:15 Timberjack (1955)

Based on the novel by Dan Cushman, this Western directed by Joseph Kane sees Sterling Hayden playing Tim Chipman, an honest lumberman who returns home to find his father murdered. Chipman gets his own back by setting the family timber company against ruthless competitor Croft Brunner. It seems that Brunner is also a rival for the heart of saloon keeper Lynne Tilton, but she is won over to Chipman's side when she discovers that Brunner was also responsible for the death of her father.

Aided and hindered by his pals Walter Sobchak, a Vietnam vet, and Donny, master of stupidity, The Dude finds himself involved in violence, mayhem and bowling rivalry with Jesus Quintana in another Coen Brothers classic.

Monte Hellman's road film is one of the seminal American movies of the 70s, ranking alongside Easy Rider as a work that highlights the transition from the optimistic 60s into the cynicism of the 70s. Singer/songwriter James Taylor and Beach Boy Dennis Wilson play the driver and mechanic of a 1955 Chevy who earn their money taking on small-town dragsters. They meet up with Warren Oates, driver of a Pontiac GTO, who suggests a race to Washington DC; the winner taking the loser's car. Along the road, they pick up Laurie Bird and the foursome set out on a trip across the America of run-down towns, diners and cheap motels where hope and optimism are in short supply.
