The term "fringe reception" is sometimes used to refer to a difficult to get signal but what is "difficult to get".

A few floaters are listed below, before they get flushed down the pan I might make up a small table similar to "The Big Arc Men" and "The Big Dish Men" tables.

Floater 1. Should it be confined to a zone/country? Reception of 43.1W in C-Band aint easy in the UK for a small dish man but it is a breeze for more westerly DX Men with a bin lid.
Floater 2. Does the official satellite footprint beam cover the country/zone, if yes, is it fringe, if no, is it deffo fringe?
Floater 3. Are there grades of fringe recption such as Standard Fringe, Extreme Fringe and Ultra Extreme Fringe. The very top UK DX Man, now retired, used to say he was only interested in "Extreme Fringe"
Floater 4. Is it a waste of time and beyond the fringe?

Might have a C-Band 'Floater 3' here MB on my mini 2.2mtr Elite from 70 West captured on the GTCombo rx, location North Nottinghamshire UK.
Two digital signals coming in at the moment - could improve later on in the day ?
3699 V - Rede Tv - grabbed but will not lock.
3711 V locked and displayed.

@John

That 70.0W is deffo "Floater 3 - Extreme Fringe" level, could probably be considered as a candidate for "Floater 3 - Ultra Extreme Fringe"
That is an awesome catch for a small dish from a UK location, well done.

If I create a "Big Fringe Men" table you gotta be top of the class with that one.
Perhaps send your CV to that guy on the forum who is looking for a 2.5m to 3.0m C-Band dish, might get an earner as a consultant from him?

Joking apart, really top class catch.

Looks that way, perhaps you can use your combo to post a few fringe catches with that 2.4m CM when you get it installed.

Aye, it was reet fun scanning with those LT8700 and watching the sparklies developing into a picture when the frequency and skew was being auto scanned.
I bought my LT8700 from Spectrum, they had a high street shop in Selsdon, Surrey not far from me.

I had mine from a local dealer, long gone now..SSS just sold the Montereys I think. One or two other dealers sold them but can't remember the names..

Pah, I couldn't get on with that modern stuff like the SR-5500 & Monterey. I don't think anything could beat an Echostar SR-4500 for scratching around in the noise. It was even better with the external 70MHz filter. A right pain to scan though.

Chek out my rack. Some more are of course stored elsewhere....
I wish I'd be using the M140 for something else but turning the antenna. 70W is unfortunately way away from my reach.

The Echostars were supplied though Eurosat (though JD Electronics always brought a few imports in). There was a bespoke filter box developed for use on many of the receivers, taking their source from the same part of the tuner circuitry, which Echostar used under licence - from memory and the LT stuff was born.

Spectrum, there's a name. They also ran an installation business, returning just over half the number of receivers that they successfully put in homes.

I'm still getting much of 68.5 East here on an 80cm dish upstairs, but the neighbouring trees make it hit and miss in the summer.
(No chance from the bigger stuff at ground level) Imagery courtesy of a potato that was lying about.

Just.... WOW! @Analoguesat - you listening?

I have been eyeing that transponder/satellite for a long time, given that I have a clear LOS to the west horizon. But my polar mount (Precision 2.2 one - modified) runs into itself at 59W and the Venture jack is fully compressed. How are you managing to drive the dish that far?

I also have an LT8700 in the loft.....

I bought my LT8700 from Spectrum, they had a high street shop in Selsdon, Surrey not far from me.
I had an Amstrad SRD510 back then.....
