Thanks for the advice, i shall have a look at the Ultimo, Yes you are right of course, the front screen isn't really important, just thought it looked nice lol..I suppose what drew me to the gigablue and the duo2 was the processor speed of 1300..i have a Packard Bell 1tb external hard drive on my amiko alien so will use that for the time being on whatever new receiver i get

Here's the link to the website
hipertelecom.com/index.php?target=products&product_id=2590

Sorry tried to make it a non live link, but whatever i did, it seems it is still a live link, can someone edit it for me?

I'm now looking at the Ultimo after your advice, it looks good and as you say the front screen supplies a lot of info, not really fussed with all the tuners but i suppose they could come in handy at some stage..I read though(only in a couple of threads) that the tuner wasn't all that great and i would need something that has a fairly sensitive tuner, as you own one what are your thoughts?
Also been looking at the solo2 too, have you had any experience with this box? is it a lot faster with the extra processor power?
Still looking at the gigablue but couldnt find any info on the tuner sensitivity so i think i will end up going for one of the vu's for the support ect
Thanks Richard

Sorry for silly question, but how can you measure tuner's sensitivity? For example, I have not noticed any difference in sensitivity of tuners of DM8k and GB-Quad, I mean NOT at all, they just different tuners. And if there is difference, than it is so minimal... it is actually better to have properly adjusted dish and LNB, also using good cable, those 3 elements have more influence to overall system performance (reception) than hypothetical (unmeasurable) difference of tuner's sensitivity. .

Hi Rima
Yes i see your point, let me explain. I'm in Spain and only have a 1.2m dish, there are a couple of weaker channels like channel4 and channel5 (28.2). Having a receiver with a good sensitive tuner can make all the difference of receiving these channels or not, for instance channel 5 i can receive all day on my current receiver but with the old receiver i had it used to break up around 8pm and not come back until the early morning..Years ago the old pace 2600 was renowned for having a good tuner and was the prefered choice in fringe reception areas
You are quite right of course i could do with a bigger dish and that would take the worry out of having a sensitive tuner, but its all about money and having a nice new sexy receiver to play with is sexier than having a bigger dish lol
Just waiting for Huevos to come back to me for his comments on the ultimo, i have now read that they reckon the ultimo has an extra sensitive tuner and tends to flood the weaker transponders so some people have bought a signal reducer (tenuator i think) to lower the signal which has apparantley worked

Richard, when people talk about receivers with exceptional tuners they are not talking about E2 receivers. There are a handful of receivers with exceptional tuners but usually it is a complete accident and they are absolute rubbish in every other area.

But, reality check, this part of Spain is not DX. As long as you have a big enough dish you'll have no problem receiving 2F transponders.

As far as the Ultimo tuners (AVL2108, internal single) they are pretty good since the FPGA and driver updates last year. The twin tuner (AVL6222) card is similar in performance. With a 1.2 x 1.1m dish I am getting about 9.6dB SNR on 2F transponders. 7.7dB is easily enough to maintain a stable picture. As far as E2 receivers go the tuners in the Vu+ range are as good as or better than any other E2 box.

Thanks for all your info Huevos as always

And if you really do need an LCD you can always use one that is not integrated into the receiver.

What is this? a seperate lcd screen that you can plug into the usb socket or something?

Yes. Interface depends on the device. The plugin is LCD4Linux, which is the same software that controls the internal LCD on the Duo2. I don't know much more because I don't own one, but if you have any questions post on the ViX forum as at least one of the beta testers has one.

how would you rate your receivers - Vu Ultimo, SkyStar2 HD and Dr HD In term of tuner sensitivity
