Just a query..

Currently have a DIY set up in the garden 90cm dish on a pole etc...to get freeview and european channels etc..does the job.

im renting a house and landlord has said i can get dish on house (finally)

i did register for sky, with install on saturday but now im thinking of cancelling that and just getting my dish/motor put on the house...i have all boxes , dish, lnb etc...its simply a case of install...

how much you think they would charge me? local installers..

cheers all

If you've got a $ly receiver then it's best to have a dedicted satellite dish for it. The box needs an almost permanent connection so that it can download the overnight updates for itself (not often admittedly) and the "stay alive" signal for the card.

Then go ahead and use the motorised dish (wherever it's located!) for exploring the other satellites.

I think you'll find typical motorised sat installation costs [DiSEqC HH] would be anywhere from £125 to £200.

Why dont you have a go at installing it yourself? Theres plenty of help available on the forum and you will learn a lot for when a big gale comes along and disturbs the alignment.

im scared of doing it to be honest....
i mean its been hassle enough aligning from the garden watching the tv throug hthe window etc (know what i mean)

im a bit scared of going up wall of house etc, woiuld prefer some one to do it for me...

OR i have an alternative plan....

I have a garage...and was thinking of installing the dish on the side of the garage...

what do you chaps think?

I agree with Satelliteman's price estimate. For those quotes you have gotten are much closer to supply and install prices.

Why not have a go at fitting it on the side of the garage, and if you don't feel confident then keep looking for an installer. Why not post an ad in the Installer wanted section ?

Think I might have a go at installing on the side of the garage...

How do i go about doing this? sorry for sounding like a n00b but my current set up is a pole drilled into a concrete slab...

I supose i will need a smaller pole? what else, and what tools? like i said im a n00b with DIY!!

Any one else connected they're set up to a side of garage chaps?

Probably need a set of TK brackets and a decent mast. I always include these items when quoting installation prices.

I think that is the crux of it. If a customer is supplying their own gear the installer is going to lose out on the profit of the hardware so needs to charge more for the install.

Work wise it is a good couple of hours plus travelling time so anything around Satman's estimate for labour and fixings is reasonable.

Don't use an L bracket it is not adjustable. Use T'n'K brackets. This is important, otherwise you will never get the mast plumb and tracking the satellite arc will be impossible.

If motor is being mounted between the TK brackets, then a 2 inch thick walled steel mast or a scaffold off cut. Size of T&K will depend on clearance, positioning and arc required.

Depending on the material your be drilling into, either coach screws / nylons or some sort of anchor bolts for attaching bracketry to wall.

Okay brick so M8 x 70 coach screws and M10 nylons. Concrete / stone then use shield anchors or like.

You are sure your landlord will be happy with you installing it, even if you don't cause damage he might not be too impressed with a big dish suddenly springing up with a load of holes in his garage wall. I assume there will be something in your contract that says he can charge you for repairs if he want's to get arsey about things so it might just be worth running it passed him before you attack the garage with a power tool.

nah its cool man.

been here 5 years.

only had a contract for first 6 months..landlady is bloody useless trust me.

she gave me authority to get a sky dish on the house recently (which i didnt bother going ahead with) so i presume she'l b alright with most shiz.

i might have a go this weekend.
