Ah I wonder - Ive been seeing regular glitches in the transmission over the last few days - a very short break every 10 seconds or so. That might be enough to trigger the Sky banner.

However things seem to be better this evening.

well...i suppose they are test channels after all and once they start transmitting with EPG it should be OK.

There is speculation in the SKY+ HD forum on DS that the encrypted ITV1 HD test on the Astra 2B SOUTH beam (TP 14 11973 V 27500 2/3) may be the version that will be on the SKY EPG with the 2D FTA transmission being only for Freesat.

This would be excellent news for expats with Sky cards.

(I do wonder however if the they would consider encrypting two ITV1 regions worthwhile for the sake of providing ITV1 HD to freesat subscribers.)

Why would ITV run two identical versions??

That is what the speculation is about!

One theory is that "rights issues" might restrict the transmission of some programmes FTA (even on 2D) so the encrypted version will be used for SKY subscribers with the freesat viewers getting a blank screen.

If it were to be encrypted would ITV be entitled to some revenue from $ly? Even if there was an FTA version??

I haven't read the other thread but what if Sky had two regions of HD and Freesat just had the FTA one? At least then more people would see some of the correct ads?

If you think about it there are not really any HD channels transmitting in the clear on 2D with a lot of content that has rights issues.

C4 HD and E4 HD are both encrypted, and the BBC HD channel is not a simulcast so they can filter out sensitive content.

Maybe the rights holders are a lot fussier about their HD contect being broadcast in the clear (even on spot beams) than their legacy definition (LD) content.

This would explain why "five HD" seems to be going down the encrypted route and also why their might be two versions of ITV1 HD.

True, we already know the BBC want to restrict Freeview HD content for recording purposes and encryption on Sky provides a neat way to control content too.

Can anybody tell me whether they are seeing ITV HD on the Freq 11973 ....I can get the Carrier but no modulation at all. I can receive the other two Channels on the same Freq i.e ITV1 Central E & ITV1 Central S + Channel Max (although at the moment Max shows a blank screen) but no ITV HD, which Btw comes in as number 7480/1. Much obliged if someone can cfm.

Good point. Even people with HD sub cards cannot see the transmissions so there is no way of knowing if it is there at all. It is listed on flysat but on what basis I have no idea.

Well it's an H264 video/AC3 audio stream with a data rate of over10 Mbps, so it's surely ITV HD.

The "call broadcaster ... channel update screen" on 7480 has now disappeared and there is a blue screen. 7481 is still showing the upgrade message.
