Very nice! Impressed that you get Eastern beam on Turksat - didn't think it was possible in the UK.
...ahhh but you see ..he's using Christinas twin sister ..
She may be petalised ..but nonetheless ..a mighty fine dish

The sun put in an appearance ...and I was finally able to complete the job..
So this will be the final post on the subject of extension wings .

Well, maybe you might revise the colour scheme in due course: Sort of Chocolatey on the wings and, errm, Orange in the middle?

Reminds me of something .......................

Well done VS. A suitable conclusion to your epic fabrication job.

At least I ASSUME it's the conclusion?

First a question - is it a prime focus dish? If you've got an off-set dish then in practical terms the answer would be no.

Second, assuming it is PF dish, you would need to have a feed horn with a mechanism (such as adjustable scalar rings) to cope with the bigger dish - you can't just move the LNB in or out to compensate.

Yes its an off set dish can i ask why would it not be possible to extend an offset dish? can you extend the lnb arms if need and finally can you not convert from a offset to a prime focus dish if needed

An off-set dish is actually an angled slice through a prime focus dish, if you look at the dish from the LNB's point of view it looks (more or less!) circular at that angle. Because of this you can't use the same profile all the way round as VS did with his petal extensions. Also, because of that, conversion between PF and O/S is thus not possible.

When you add extensions to a dish you're not altering the focal point of the dish, that's why the LNB needs to stay in the ame position. What you DO need to alter is how wide an angle the LNB will accept the signals reflected from the dish. This is the ratio of the diameter of the dish (which will increase) against the focal point (which stays the same). This is why you need adjustable scalar rings on the LNB horn. If you don't have this adjustment available then the LNB will simply ignore the extra signal coming in - or at least it will if the original horn was properly designed and adjusted.

Finally, VS is using his dish on C band which uses much lower frequencies than Ku band. This is important because the higher frequencies of Ku band needs an accurately shaped dish profile. Your profile indicates that you're only on Ku band.

Ok a real shame and it would save me spending 2000+ on a new dish thanks for the informative reply any way PaulR

...Well prompted by CH ...and I did need a kick up the proverbial to get back on course ..
I calculated that the petals needed more tilt some time ago ..
About 1cm lift per wing..in order to make the dish a little deeper ..and get the focal length back to roughly where it _should_ have been ...ie 82 cm ..
currently calculations show it to be about 84 >85 ..which is too far out really to make all of each petal efficient..
So a simple experiment to prove my calcs and estimates are correct.
First I pointed Christina at TPC at 0.8w...
And a photo taken ...currently showing it at 6.1 > 6.2 db..
Nothing changed position wise ...just 2 of the non tripod bearing wings were released...allowing the tilt angle to be changed by about 1cm each
See photos ..
These were prevented from sagging back by a couple of bolts through the lateral holes..
I then nipped indoors and took another photo ..
Just 2 wings lifted and the signal level had risen from 6.2 db to at least 6.6 db occasionally 6.7
again ..see photos..
Totally conclusive that although very pretty ...more work to adjust the wings is needed.
But I've known this for some time ...and discussed it with Nelson last time he visited.
I'm not too well atm ..but if the weather stays ok ..I'll have to make a start..
Those pips wont squeeze themselves ya know..

...Ok just performed the same trick on the 3rd non tripod wing ...
Another small increase on TPC from 6.7 to 6.9 db ..
..and a small increase in db from BBC world news on the hybrid black ultra ku..
..briefly I got 14.9 db ..but holding steady at 14.8..
So about 1db behind a black ultra at the focus of a TD110...
..pretty good from an offset lnb on a pf I think ...and still 3 wings to correct ..but that would require more than a quick experiment..
But ..
The potential to squeeze a bit more juice from those pips is still there..
;)

..what this brief experiment has shown me is that they are in use ..working ..and effective ..
with 3 wings lifted by about 1/2 inch each ...I gain about 0.2 db per wing ....and that I have at least another 0.5 >0.6 db to be had accross the board ..in both C and ku..
Do I want it ...yes I DO ...so I will dream up a way of getting it ..
;)
