Hooray! Back up & running and getting up to speed again; new PSU and back to my 3 GHz E8400 CPU...next stop, new Digital TV! And install of Win7 so I can use MCE. Grabbing nPVR atm I can at least say that the TBS 6891 does seem a good card; low impact and does what I want in dual tuner DVB-S2l can easily record in background and do anything I want on the system at the same time, with no impact on it Will get back to you lads - thanks for all the help - nPVR looks a lot better than the TBSViewer and just scanning stations atm..

Good news. Keeps us up to speed. I'm patiently waiting for the appearance of the blind scanning TBS 6986. It's a long time coming...

Incidentally Llew; when I was doing the research on a Dual DVB-S2 card, I understood that the 6891 was a necessary update to the 6890, for which they'd made some mistake; now, I can't say whether that's true or not, but I did avoid the 6890 for that reason; I only got the 6891 coz I could get it at 6890 prices; the £168 price tag was way over the top otherwise If you go to the TBS site _http://www.tbsdtv.com/english/product/6981.html, you'll see that they do have a few versions labelled 0's that have a 1 released afterwards.... My prob was finding a dual tuner for DVB-S2, as there don't yet seem to be too many of these about; I don't know enough about the different manufacturers to know which ones are trustworthy and only chose TBS on a personal recommendation

Tuner/demodulator chipsets in some receivers can 'sweep' the tuning range of the satellite's spectrum and store all found channels in the box's database. It doesn't depend on the fixed channel list that the receiver has stored - it can find all channels available at the time of scanning, within the limits of the tuner's spec (minimum/maximum symbol rates, type of demodulation).

It's also possible with some receivers to use software for blind scanning, but is usually much slower.

Rare to find in a pci card - an early version of the Skystar card had hardware scanning.

Now that sounds very useful; surely it can just be written into the code of the application you use for viewing\scanning quite easily? It doesn't depend on a hardware solution. The channel list changes too often - though the changes do seem to mostly be cosmetic, nonsense channels, to a newbie like me.... Looking at your Specs though Llew, it'd be even more useful for you!

The blind scan feature is indeed written into the software of several receivers - I have the facility in at least two of mine (Fortec FS5100 and Asto Simba), neither of which are particularly rapid in scanning the spectrum. In any case they need several passes for each session, as you need to scan a user-defined set of SR's for each frequency range. Similarly with the BS feature of my DVBViewer Pro/Transedit application.

As far as I'm aware, the TDA10071 chip in the TBS6928, having a dedicated blind scan module incorporated in the chip does the whole spectrum in one pass, but I would need confirmation of this. May be similar with receivers with hardware BS (Vantage, Cuberevo et al).

Aye, that's it RobTi! The things I found hardest about all this Finding a Dual Tuner S2 PCIe card; there don't seem to be too many of them about just yet Choosing a Brand Not knowing about Blind Scanning etc Can someone explain what I'm doing wrong with text formatting in posts? I use paragraphs, even tried indenting, using ordered lists, but my post still comes out as a single line of text...
