Just Sharing This Preparation for the unexpected

Hello all forum members.
I didn´t post this over the festive period, so as not to take the shine off everyone´s Christmas and New Year, but now I feel the need to share some information.

A friend of mine, Rob ( Robin ) died at 3pm Christmas Day. He was 6 months younger than me ( 50 years old ) and was here to look after his Mum who has had a stroke and now bed bound due to a hip replacement.

He died of a perforated ulcer, ( he told us a couple of days before he thought it was bad flu )

Why am I sharing this? I think it is important to all ex-pats to check the rules and regs in the country they live in. Rob passed away with about €400 to his name, the cost of cremation in Spain is €2,600 and there was no money to pay for it. I personally stumped up the rest of the money to see Rob " laid to rest ", as Mum had nothing and no family coming forward to help.

What I´m trying to advise everyone is to be prepared for the worst.
In Spain, upon death, they also freeze the bank accounts, so in the death of a partner, the other may not be able to access funds to pay for a " funeral " or even live, until the authorities have sorted things out.
I advise all to ensure they have a " funeral plan " in place ( and stash some cash in the house ) so if it happens there is something to live on. Also, in Spain, the longer " on ice " the more the costs rack up. Leaving a will is also very important as in Spain they have different rules regarding " rights " of partners and siblings.

Not sure about other counties, but I hope some of you will advise to help educate us all.

I would also like to advise ( and thank ) the fact that the regulars at " my office " the Bar Pirata in Rojales have been very generous. There have been collections and a New Years raffle to raise money to reimburse me for some of the expense, I am also aware other fund raising activities are being planned. I have already received over € 830 of the money I put up.
There are still good folks on the planet!

Sorry if this is a little disjointed, never done this before.

You should be congratulated, I doubt many would rally round in England, certainly not where I live as most pubs are closed down now and any sense of community spirit has all but disappeared. I take it on board about the differences which will not affect me, but there are different pitfalls for living in the warmer climates of the world, also sorry to hear of this sad event

It's a shock to the system when one of your friends/family dies - and they're they same age or, worse, younger. If it's in an accident that's one kind of bad but if it can be called a death from something medical that's another. It could have happened to me!

Certainly makes you think about your own mortality. All the best for the New Year to you Brian.

I'm sorry to hear about this Brian. I don't have that much experience of French funeral costs despite my wife passing away here. She'd expressed a wish to have her body donated to medical research (actually to the University Hospital where she'd had cancer treatment). It was all dealt with very quickly and she left the house before noon the same morning she died. It left very little time for grieving.

Despite her 'donation' there was still a charge of about €800 to pay. Some six months later I got a letter to say she'd been cremated and her ashes scattered at the donors memorial in Rennes Cemetery. My stepdaughter and I went to view the monument and we both felt some closure.

I have some slight experience of death "overseas" - in Spain as it happens.

My mother's brother died over there in 2002 in Estepona. He had moved to Spain with his extended family some thirty years previously and so there was plenty of family on hand to sort things out. I accompanied my mother out there and we stayed for about a week in total so I could take my mother for a few drives out and about - especially to Gibraltar. He chose cremation and his ashes were scattered on a hillside near to where he and his wife had a home some years previous.

Although we have a property in France we are still residents of the UK so we make sure that we have travel insurance to cover us when we're over there. I would recommend everyone to take such a precaution.

Sorry for the loss of your friend.

We have friends who live full time in France and they recently explained the need for a car to be registered in joint names otherwise in the event of 'his' death, 'she' wouldn't be entitled to drive it

On a bad day, DB RIP, a show of good.
I went to the office today and was handed €120 by a friend, " to help with what you did for Rob "

We can be heroes, just for one day

Latest update, just to show how good some people are.
The " collection " for me, to help pay for Rob has now exceeded €1000, and to top it all, the " gobbiest " guy in the bar has promised to be silent for a whole day next Wednesday, if he speaks, he pays double the amount sponsored.

Nice work.

In my experience, human nature is far more virtuous than the Media would have us believe.

Have just got home having spent about 3.5 hours at the local Policia National office sorting out paperwork to ensure I´m still legal in Spain. Should have been a ten minute job, but, this is Spain. Anyway, on the way home stopped at the office " to check my e-mails " and was greeted by Sam, the landlady ( more of a land girl, mid 20´s ddg etc ) gave me 200€ towards the fund.
Shaun ( the sheep ) kept his mouth shut for over 12 hours, as promised.

On this occasion, happy to be under gobbed! Well done Shaun and all who paid him to shut up!

This brings the total to over 1200€ donated by good folk
