Advice Needed Sheds and planning permission

Do I need planing permission for a wooden shed?

If not how tall are they? I will need to replace one of the old sheds (so happens the same shed is also blocking some view to the sat dish)

As I would like to relocate it to a more satellite friendly position and if I can block next door from being able to view my patio. (The blocking of next door is just a bonus)

If not I might need to get a Dog waste bin to plant in that spot, hopefully that will stop them!

No planning needed at all, as long as it meets guidelines of where it's situated but it's only really daft places that are not allowed
like the gap between two houses etc.

They have built an extension and lowered the height of the fence between us.

Before the extension they had a conservatory, that made them unable to view my patio.

Now they are putting decking in, this makes them able to look into my bedroom window and over the patio that was previously private from them.

I don’t appreciate them invading my privacy.

There should be nothing to stop you erecting a taller fence on your side a few inches in and parallel to their fence that was lowered. Nowt they can do about it provided it is kept to a sensible height and you have the justification that it is to restore your privacy that has been eroded.

However, if you need to relocate or replace a shed and stick it right next to the lowered fence to block out their view of your patio then that would be OK. If you are replacing a shed get the new one with an apex roof to get more height.

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
Would suggest;
- Check you Local Authority website as planning regs often differ between Authorities.
- Install some "better" curtains/blinds in your bedroom - even cheap/simple net curtains will prevent anyone seeing what is going on behind them! (all our upstairs, and most downstairs, windows have those because, if you live - as we do - in a densely populated area then that's almost "de riguer". They also make it more difficult for predatory "low-lives" to see if it is "worth" trying to break in!)
- Ref the height of their fence - in extremis, build a suitably-high fence on YOUR side of theirs!

Every man needs a shed, especially for dish parts. Get one up Chris :)

I was able to sit on the back step first thing in the morning with a mug of tea and cigarette, let the dog have his sniff around in private.

I am not to sociable when I get up, I don’t appreciate his children screaming and shouting at me and invading my space.

My bedroom has blackout curtains so no one can peep through the window without being in my enclosed back garden.

I'm just not sociable, though as luck would have it my next door neighbour asked if I could spare some wood.
I gave them ALL the wood from my fence that I took down the other day, saves me a trip to the tip! I did offer her some concrete but she declined lol.

HaHa!! I'm on to you Chris, this "Shed" is quite obviously to cover the hatch from which your doomsday device will emerge from as you move onto your final stage of your plans to black mail the governments of the world into paying your ransom or feel it's rath. :pThe first clue was your inconceivable electricity use obviously.........

Just been looking at sheds, would a few slabs on the grass be good enough for the base of the shed?

As I have seen they need to be on a base.

Yip, that's a common base mate, especially with pallet based sheds.

No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

No planning needed for sheds as far as I'm aware, they're temporary structures, are below a minimum height, and tend not to be "liveable", so, buy one, sling it up, enjoy your privacy... :)

You could also consider raising the shed slightly off the slabs with some wood to prevent the floor joists beings in direct contact with the slabs. It would add longeivity to the floor joists. I used decking board cut into lengths to run at 90 degrees to the shed floor joists and spaced them with gaps between them of just over 1ft.

Also, if there are any sides of the shed that are going to be close up to a building or fence it might be worth considering giving those sides an extra coat or two of stain before locating the shed in its final position. As rain drains from the roof of the shed onto the slabs you will get splashback onto the bottom couple of inches and the extra coat or two of stain on inaccessible sides helps prevent long term wood rot. I gave the bottom three lengths of shiplap on the back of the shed a coat of creocote before setting the shed up in its final location.

Around here there is a maximum height for out door structures and you need planning permission to build decking if it is raised on a support frame. My neighbour one side built decking a metre above ground level because the gardens slope. I planted three trees to give us some privacy and now she complains they block out the morning sunlight.

Decking laid flat on slabs to marginally raise a shed off slabs would not need planning permission. If the word "decking" gets the local authorities "agitated" use gravel board instead.
