Hi,

Is there a way in which I can stream my dreambox over the net to allow a few mates to watch the odd footie game ?

Cheers

You will need some serious upload bandwidth, probably not the best solution

I stream to my mates sometimes, I have 1.5mbit upload. Streaming the Darts to a mate as we speak. Read the tutorials on Streaming to the web using VLC, it works very well indeed.

B16MCC who is your service provider that gives you 1.5MB/s. I thought I was doing well at 768KB/s. At 1.5MB/s you should be able to just use the web interface not even re-stream with vlc.

ooh ouch. Virgin cable internet is pretty much untouchable in the UK for a residential connection. I have a giganews account which is a premium newsgroup server obviously on a very fast connection indeed and my 50mbit is always right up there. It never goes below about 44mbit. It's very reliable.

I read they are trialing 200mbit , I think it said in London. God knows what the actual optical network is capable of.

UPC have a 30mb down and 3mb up but I am with a different ISP

I have a 768 upload and it's not enough. Easy to try of course. Just open an http port on your router and associated to the box IP and give it a shot. When I did the testing (lots and lots of scenarios) I concluded that the minumum, bare minimum, is a stable 1 mb upload (emphasis on stable). I do suspect however that this will differ between ISPs and furthermore, the cable providers seem to be the most reliable.

Wildbit , you could downsample via VLC but you'd start to get pretty poor quality I think. As a reference , I always use WMV1 at 768kb and a single audio channel at 96kb. I set scale to 0.75 and my mates are very happy with my streams.

With a 768 upload, you could try putting the video at 512 and the audio the same at 96, it doesn't leave you much left though.

I hear you B16MCC... at the time I tried everything but it is true that I had a pretty bad isp. I will try again with your suggestions though as you mentioned downsampling reduceces quality significantly and that is how I concluded with the easy number of 1MB upload.

Thanks for the tip ;-)

Hi

Is it possible to stream from one dm500 to another? The reason I ask is because I have one dm500 (downstairs) connected to my dish and the other is in my bedroom where there is no satelite (LNB cable connection)

Rather than running a satelite cable upstairs or watch the stream on a PC I was thinking of streaming the channels directly to the second dm500 in my bedroom.

Thanks In advance

You can but you can only use one box at a time with that system. If you run another cable you will have 2 indipendent boxes :-)
