Agree about DPD, but many of the others are getting better too.

The industry is maturing, at long last, with the recipient now considered important, unlike the early days.

DPD recently carried a 5l litre container of Engine Oil that had split and leaked all over the van right to my house (Miles away from the nearest main road) simply so I could formally decline delivery!

And his sense of humour was intact.

DPD are pretty good. In fact, most are getting better, like G said. I still have an issue with Hermes though. OK most of the time, but I would not trust them to carry something expensive for me.

Reply to the first questions in this thread :D

VP, the easiest way to back up Mozilla and thunderbird is to just type %appdata% in the windows run box.

This will display the roaming folder, Just copy the profile.ini file and the profile folder from the mozilla and thunderbird folders. Copy them into the equivalent folder in Linux. I've done it backwards and forwards between windows and Linux many times and it works fine.

You will have to look for the correct folder under linux. Its been a while since i've done it and cannot remember the file locations in Linux.

Ok ..
I'm currently accessing the forum on my new half built upgrade PC ..
Now I want to try something I've never used before..
Desktop Sharing ..
It will be over local lan only ...and there are 2 reasons for this ..
a) I want easy access whilst I build the new pc ...to the old pcs desktop etc..
This will help and speed the process ...as there is much to do.
b) once complete I'd like to retain functionality to the old main pc via remote desktop to be used as a workhorse for usenet access etc .
The PC would then no longer have a monitor mouse or keyboard attached ..the only access being via a second PC desktop sharing.
Hope this makes sense..
??
Both OS will be Win7 ..the old being 32 bit ...the new being 64bit ..
But as said already I have never tried/used this before so I'm requesting some help from those who have.
I know windows has such features built in but appear a bit limited ...requiring the pc being accessed to actually grant that access ?
As said the old pc will still be connected to the network but placed in a remote location in my house with no keyboard or monitor ..
So ..
what is the best or preferred method of doing this ? ..preferably free..and easily set up.
Advice or suggestions welcomed.

VS, I use Remote Desktop extensively at work - it's a built in feature of every Windows OS from version XP and up. You need to enable it from 'System' properties in Control Panel on the target machine and then simply start Remote Desktop Client and type in the IP address or host name of that server. It works very well and is one of the best features on any MS OS.

Mac OS X and Linux VNC is in stone age compared to this.

Thanks for the speedy reply Alex ..
As said already ..I don't want any human interface devices attached to the old pc ..
I just want it to sit on the LAN and allow the new pc access automatically ..ie ..initiated by the new build ..so preferably without password exchanges ..or keyboard presses for acceptance ?
Is this possible ?
If so could you idiot guide me through the process ?
cheers
VS

That's fine - once you set it up, the old PC (the one you'll be RDC-ing into) doesn't need anything attached. None of our servers at work have anything... As long as you set the BIOS to not moan about pressing F1 key because the keyboard is missing.

Passwordless set-up is not really possible. It will log on to the Windows account that's already set up there (be Administrator or whatever) but it MUST have a password - it will not logon without it. You can save this password in a RDC profile though, so all you'll have to do is start the RDC and press connect.

So ...scuse me for being stoopid ...
Cant help that unfortunately ..
But If I run the old PC as admin but setup without login password ..
ie allow to boot into windoze without entering a password ...(no keyboard or monitor ..remember)
will this still work ..?
eg ..
Admin account would just 'for example' be vipersan ...and no password as such

There are ways to auto log on to a server with a password enabled on start up. So you can set up your existing account with a password and then do this...

Log On Automatically at Startup - Windows 7 Help Forums

That way, you'll still have all your settings retained and when you log on via RDC, you'll be presented with your desktop - as if you're sat in front of the PC itself

+1 for remote desktop

I also use it extensively at work (win7 clients) and it does just work. Its a nice bit of software when I need a quick look at one of the stations the other side of the site

Just make sure you keep track of which station you are working on (its labelled in the title bar but its easy to lose track if you get interrupted & Ive logged out of the wrong station more than once :D )

Got as far as my first rating ..
I'm suitably impressed so far ..
The lowest score going to the sata primary drive ...
Which will soon be replaced with a 3TB sataIII 6mb/s Toshiba ...
I didn't even know the motherboard supported it ...but apparently does ...so makes sense to push access time up a bit..
;)

What is particularly nice and soothing on my old eyes is being able to use a 32" LG TV as a monitor via hdmi in 1920/1080.

Because we are at the end of about 2-3 miles of ratty copper cable and thats all the cables will give us until the next technological jump comes along. We are too far from the cabinet for FTC ( the nearby town has all been done) and the chances of us getting a radio delivered service are remote in the extreme.

Ive investigated broadband via satellite but the monthly costs for anything other than light users are horrendous

Just thought i'd post this to annoy AS, Just had a free upgrade :D

Only 5Mbit upload though? That's disgraceful. Downloading at full pelt will use at least half of upload leaving very little for anything of actual use.

Why would i need fast upload speeds. I don't cardshare, i don't upload stuff to torrents an i don't use cloud storage, 5mb up is ample for what i use my connection for.

To be honest its fine as i don't have to deal with the clowns at Openreach, who would need to run a new cable to my house anyway since the old one got ripped out last year.

They charged me £50 to disconnect from their shi**y services when i went to VM so i made sure it was disconnected, Permanently :D

They would need to dig up the drive to install a new one :-lmao

Well fwiw I'm seriously impressed with the data transfer rates on this new build ..
Moved a 900mb BDrip from the PC to storage via esata in less than 3 seconds ...
The same file copied to the freenas server took a lot longer of course ..
restricted by lan speeds ..it took around 2 minutes
Slowly getting it together ..
Now have Newsbin installed and fully functional clone of the original build..
Also have the TBS card installed now..
Soon hopefully have everything needed for MeteorM2 installed ...
cant wait to see how well AirSpy is handled.
