From the BBC News Desk

The English Premier League is considering plans to extend the season to 39 games by staging some matches abroad.

At a meeting in London on Thursday, all 20 clubs agreed to explore a proposal to extend the season to 39 games.

Those 10 extra games would be played at five different venues, with cities bidding for the right to stage them.

It is understood the additional fixtures could be determined by a draw but that the top-five teams could be seeded to avoid playing each other.

What do we think of this proposal to stage an extra round of games abroad? I think it's a bloody disgrace, how dare they take our national league away from us :-Nooo If they try it, I think UEFA should ban clubs from participating in Europe.

I'm trying to work out how they would do it, as they are looking at adding an extra game to the season. So how would they work out who plays who, the idea now is that everyone plays every other team twice, how can they fairly organise this?

I don't particularly have a problem with the overseas games, as I don't go to watch football, I am normally working. I do however see why some may have a problem with it.

Apparently they would draw the games out at random, like the FA Cup.

For me, it's a b******isation of the league, it breaks two of the founding principles of league football; all teams play each other an equal number of times, the national league is played in the nation in which it represents.

I think it's purely financed based to increase revenue. I suppose this has to be done to pay players millions of pounds.

Football selling even more of its soul.

Oh yes, not doubt at all that is purely based on finance, but of course more broadly that simply the revenue from these extra games.

The Premiership are looking at the potential extra TV revenues in these countries and worldwide, which could make any gate money earned seem insignificant.

It does concern me that the top five clubs will be seeded, so that they don't play each other, but how can this be fair to the bottom teams.

Just another money based plan; if they really wanted to make the
game truely intrsting, they should consider having a european super
league with only the top ten clubs from each country playing.

regards.

That would not achieve what this is intended to achieve and that is a huge influx of funds to the Premiership via International TV sales and a spreading of interest in the league to new audiences.

A European super league (isn't that already being done?) would do nothing for the Premiership.

A European Super League wouldn't happen for the simple reason, amongst others, that only one of the clubs could win it, whereas now they can all have a very good chance of winning their domestic leagues.

This plan is bonkers and completely unfair to the small AND big clubs. What if very dodgy weather ruined a game into a 0-0 draw and the big club lost the title by a point?

It's all a joke, completely unworkable in a double round-robin league system. It really is just for money, which is blatently everything and all the Americans owners are interested in.

The latest is that FIFA want to get involved - http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/c...h+premier+league+international+round+proposal. As far as I can make out, these matches would have to be approved by the national association of the territory in which they would be played.

From the BBC News Desk

Prime Minister Gordon Brown calls on the Premier League to heed fans' views over plans to introduce overseas games.

Mr Brown also believes that the money earned from the foreign matches should be used to keep ticket prices down.

"Fans have to come first and you have to listen to their views on this," he told Radio 5 Live's Eamonn Holmes in an interview broadcast on Saturday.

"It's important to recognise that the money has to go back into the game."

The Premier League would only be allowed to take their games to America if Fifa permits them, according to the US Soccer Federation.

The comments follow the announcement that the English body is considering other countries hosting its games.

"We've been reluctant to have official games played in the US," US Soccer chief Sunil Gulati told BBC Sport.

"We'll be guided by Fifa on this matter. But if it's not in line with its rules then we won't sanction it.

From the BBC News Desk

Asian Football Confederation president Mohamed bin Hammam says he is strongly opposed to the Premier League playing games abroad.

The English season could be extended by one match with the 39th round being played in five overseas venues.

"We'll vote strongly against it," Hammam told BBC Radio 5 Live. "The Premier League are putting money before responsibility and dignity.

"As far as Asia is concerned, I'm not supportive of this initiative."

Well that doesn't really surprise me, as it would appear to diminish the standing of their own leagues, but whether their objection will prevent it happening is another thing altogether.

It clearly says in the FIFA regulations that any professional game must be sanctioned by the hosting association, ie the FA, French Football Federation.

I should imagine that the AFC, as the confederation under which the national associations of Asia are members, would also have the power to restrict matches held in its territory.

If the Premier League went ahead with a match without the needed authority, it would have a massive fall out for the FA, the Premier League, and even the players and manager taking part. England and the Premier League would probably be suspended from UEFA and FIFA.
