During last months storms my Ku dish managed to crack one of the bricks it's fixed into, I always assumed one or two of the bolts would just pull out of the wall as the installation is borderline taking the p*** really, a 1m dish with motor about 8ft above the top bracket on a steel scaffold pole but no, couldn't be that simple. I originally fitted it to an existing bracket position we inherited with the house by enlarging the holes and refitting the TKs but the thing is the bungalow is pebble dashed so no thought was ever put into exactly where the bolts went in relation to the bricks. The reason the brick broke is because the bolt is very nearly but not quite in it, it was partially in the mortar as well, all this has become apparent since the render fell off! I want to replace the brackets in a similar spot as it's the only place I can get such a good arc, I'll repair the brick and pebble dash first and have made a template of the brick layout so I can calculate the best places to drill but now I'm thinking about which fixings are best.

The bricks are very hard as is the render, absolutely no chance of using a normal hammer drill on this stuff as I found out when her indoors wanted some hanging baskets put up! I'm thinking about using M10 Rawlbolts my only concern about whatever I choose is how much compression/expansion they have as I don't want to break another brick! I used to use M8 Hiltibolts but I doubt they are man enough to hold this lot up. What's the pro's choice of fixing TKs for a 1m motorised dish?

I've used both M10 rawbolts and M10 Nylon Rawplugs with M8 coachbolts.

It all depends on the type of brick. Is it a solid brick or does it have holes in the middle of them.

If i know its a solid brick i have a tendency to use rawbolts, otherwise i use nylon rawlplugs and coach bolts.

I've used sleeve anchor bolts which are holding up my heavy channel master dish.

Chemical bolts? The ones where you insert the glass vial and the bolt breaks the glass and a chemical reaction occurs.

i was same when i put my dish and motor up last year house is pebble dash,so i used
10mm rawl bolts, then i found out the bolts wernt holding into brick, cos the bricks
were crumbly,so i used chemical anchor and studding bolts and with all this wind
what we had the dish hasnt lost its signal,i think glass tube is better

For drilling hard masonary you really need an SDS+ hammer drill i use one all the time as an Electrician and would never go back to the old hammer action drill.

Yes, I've been using various Bosch SDS+ models since my days installing BSB for UKRS. I think I'l go with sleeve anchors rather than chemical, there's been no problems with my main mast and that's held up with them further along the wall so I think I was just a bit unlucky with it being partially in brick and part in the mortar. Cheapest place seems to be Screwfix at about a quid each.
