My mouse was in the habit of leaving droppings and urine in a low-level drawer in the kitchen, on a daily basis.

So I hoiked everything out of there and put a trap in.

But he hasn't been back since, so the bait is an elephant (Unless Sultanas are a deterrent!).

And the Little Nipper strikes again!

Another one caught with a surprised look on his face this morning. This time using a small piece of hard fat off the beef joint we had a couple of days ago. If there were two then they might have a family so I'll put both the Little Nipper and the smaller one tonight.

Tivu, if you cleared the drawer out completely then you may have made it unattractive or no point for him to return. I would put the trap on the floor near to a wall, on an old magazine in case there's blood when it trips. I'd also ditch the sultana. Mice will eat fruit of course but they much prefer fatty things.

I think mine died next door as my neighbour trapped one very soon after my last "sighting".

But I shall certainly change the bait. Must work through all the suggestions made - if there are enough mices!

And a trap in open sight is (so SWMBO tells me) not going to happen ................

PS: When I caught Jerry, the trap was set on a large piece of folded newspaper, exactly for the purpose you mention: When the trap operated, it flicked itself and the mouse several inches and landed just off the paper. Bigger paper required.

Being close to open countryside we sometimes get field mice in the attic so keep traps there. SWMBO said she'd heard noises yesterday morning but wasn't able to check until last night......poor little sod was trapped by his foot but still very much alive. Couldn't splat him in cold blood so he lives to squeek another day.

We caught a third one. My wife went downstairs first and said she had to put it out of its misery. One that definitely didn't live to squeek another day.

We're down in France now and have seen a few droppings so I'll be able to continue my attempt to reduce the rodent population in another country.

I once rented an old wooden hut which was infested with mice. I tried several mehods, but the best result came with glue traps. I know some people don't like them as they seem to be cruel, but I just want to catch and kill as many as possible in the fastest time. I rather have a mouse suffer a bit then catch a terrible desease myself.

It said in the instructions to put the bait in the middle, and "dispose of the trap when full".
My girlfriend at the time always used to get rid of the traps when not full - but the whole purpose of the trap is that a mouse that is trapped is crying for help, and other family memebers come to investigate...works very well. I managed to catch 18 mice in a very short time.

Does not work with rats though. We once placed a few of these traps with a piece of Salami in a hut in the middle of an orchard, when we came the next morning the rats stole the bait, und in a clear act of defiance nibbled the glue traps themselves around the edges :)

We had to use poison on these....
