Nah! I think in US speak that´s a RV :D

RV? - I wish, and then we would be touring the Continent in Luxury (but what would we come home to afterwards?).

As for the Chinese "option" , see my earlier post about the exploding PIR sensor ;)

Looks like less than 18m, or thereabouts, seems the limit for power over coax connections - but most/all of mine would be 10-15m.

You can make your own cable with coax think its 75ohm but I would check first

I think RG59 is 75 Ohm but I will check - OTOH, so is a lot of other cable (and I currently have a lot of unused CT/WF100-type cable which I could probably use) , except what is specified as 50 Ohm. Not sure it makes a lot of difference to the performance unless you using it as a transmitter-to-antenna cable from what I have read!

yes 75 not 750 from memory you can get dual cable with power cable joined to it, I will be setting a system up myself soon will keep a eye on this thread

No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

With regard to those who have had their floodlights blown to smithereens, you should look into some LED replacements, cheaper to run, cheaper to buy, cheaper to repair, and often have a smaller footprint... :)

Can get them in versions of 10W, 20W, 50w, and 100W+, far out-shining the halogen equivalents, while using less power, they also have PIR & non-PIR, with & without light sensors, etc., you can get them from most DIY places here in the UK, but there's also chinese alternatives, but they do require some rewiring (I have 4x 10w LED floods, all of them needed a new cable cos they supplied them with about 6" of poor-quality aluminium 3-Core wire which wasn't even earthed inside the lamps!), but are far, far cheaper than what UK DIY places sell the same things for... :)

Picture shamelessly stolen from ebay:

My existing lights are not floodlights - just decorative "lantern" types (don't need that much range) with low-energy halogen bulbs, but I take your point about using LED types.

FWIW, last time one of the integral PIR sensors failed, I fitted an external sensor and wired that into the light because, normally, when the internal sensor fails then you then have to replace the whole fitting because you can't get a spare sensor. This has happened to me several times and also to another of my neighbours (and I then fitted an external sensor to his light). The external sensors are then quick and easy to replace - yesterday it took about 15 mins when that sensor "exploded" (See below)

Do you get the replacement sensors from anywhere special?

Looks like that sensor filled with rainwater, shorted out and went bang, if it was an ebay purchase, then they probably didn't seal it up properly hence allowing water ingress... o_O

I have looked at doing an external PIR sensor setup as the LED floods I have (and ones I want) to use wouldn't have the right angle to not shine right into the houses across the street if they had the PIR fitted directly to them, it's just working up to getting a round tuit that is a problem... :-rofl2

You could be right about water collecting inside, and it should not have happened - but, had that been the case, then the explosion should probably have happened some time ago as the sensor has been installed for nearly 3 yrs and it has rained hard many times in that time (and I don't think I have adjusted it much in that period), but not in the recent past until last night.

Regarding sensor angles, some external ones are adjustable in both the horizontal and vertical planes - obviously you want the latter type, so that you can choose whichever sensor-less floods you want (or just disable the sensors in your existing ones by bypassing those completely and controlling the LEDs from external sensors).

Not sure "a round tuit" would make any difference though :)

Your post #290:

Earlier today, I fitted a new sensor of a different type from another (and very reputable) supplier – CPC Farnell. However, as I removed the temporary replacement (the 2nd,and previously unused, of the original pair purchased) Kanlux PIR unit, I noticed a large build-up of condensation on the inside of the translucent sensor window.

If the same thing had happened to the first unit, then, over time, that could have caused a pool of water to form in the bottom of the ball-shaped sensor module, and that in turn could have led to a short-circuit condition on a component on the horizontal Printed Circuit Board, and maybe that’s what caused the same, or another, component to overheat and vaporize (thus blowing out the sensor window).

Edited: Just taken another look at the "exploded" sensor ball from a different angle - on the top (had been concentrating on the front! - and now I think I might know how the water got inside that one - if indeed that was what happened): there is a body seam across the top of housing, and on the "exploded" one it has opened up enough to let the rain in. Could have be exacerbated by some long term component overheating at the back of the sensor ball because that is also badly distorted.

OTOH, the seam on the virtually unused one has not opened up - but the water/condensation still got in there somehow:(

Who designs a supposed IP44 outdoor enclosure with an un-cemented/gasketed seam right across the top? - Only an idiot!

I'll be taking a precautionary look at all my outdoor lighting after this

A round tuit will solve all problems ever experienced. Just a matter of time.
Sorry for short reply but rain has stopped play with internet here, having to use 3G on phone!

A round tuit - do I mount it over the sensor, or do I do something naughty with it (like eat it!)?
PS: if you have rain like that then you certainly don't want anything like this thing :).

Getting back to the main point of the thread!

Apart from the (mainly Swann) systems we have been discussing, there appear to be a wide range of all sorts of CCTV DVRs and cameras on ebay - has anyone looked at/tried out any of those?

I have had 2 Chinese dvr's. Both 4 channels.

And used them to prosecute the perpetrators.

They are pretty much all the same apart from the resolution of the videos.

You can have some issues with installing the active x dll's

My new dvr, I use the on screen interface and save the photos or video (or both) to USB flash drive.

And then I can Dropbox them, email them what ever I need.

If you want it for evidence then it must have the correct time and date on the photos and videos.

Just got the internet back on!
You would not wish to eat it!
