Hmm, well that's nice and secure, the "Reset" button sets the camera back to defaults...

That'll be getting the snip... o_O

Got it connected wirelessly to GeniusVision eventually (needs to be set to "Foscam" to work though), not too keen on it's low framerate at about 10 to 12fps at 720p, but, it is Motion JPEG, so not exactly going to be speedy...

Kind of wish I got an h264 cam now... :-rofl2

Ouch. That'll chew up storage space.

Yeah, but that said GeniusVision seems to record in it's own format, so, may be "okay" in that department, but we shall see, need to mount it and see how it goes, if it's no good, I'll see about acquiring another camera...

I was expecting my camera to be a complete POS, but the video quality is pretty good, not jerky or with odd colours, and it's low-light non-IR quality is pretty damned good, bright and easily defined even when my eyes can barely see anything!! Well worth the £23 I paid, just lacks the Wifi... :)
Based on the above paragraph, I've bought myself one. Hoping to catch some wildlife. It's supposed to hold a micro sd-card but I can't figure out where it would go. Have you looked for it, 2cvbloke?

I've had the camera apart (when I first got it) and there was no SD card slot of any kind in it or anywhere to attach a slot to the PCBs inside, but the specs do say this:

Support built-in Micro SD(optional) and network storage

Presumably only optional at a factory level... :)

A few bad reports Chris, but the motor got to be worth that, also nothing stopping me converting it to colour in the future :)

This camera also comes with an iPhone 6+, IBM's Watson, and a quantum computer... optional.
Seriously, I needed to to run Internet Explorer and Active-x to figure out that the ONVIF port was 8899. It's not mentioned in the paper or pdf documents, neither in the other softwares on the disc. I wondered what other ports are open, started scanning it and googling. Turns out the intestines of many camera makes are made by the same Chinese factory.

Now I can telnet it using root password 'xmhdipc'. One can also telnet port 9527 using the admin credentials and do some configuration.
I'm going to start reading those 50 pages of that thread and see if TheUberOverLord have figured out a way to write your own firmware. Now that would be fun.

Yes, it was a pain in the bum to set up my camera, with a lot of googling and reading up about the ONVIF stuff, and having to use ActiveX under IE to access it is not exactly the way forward, but at least it's only really needed to access the settings to get it all set up and secured, after that the video's dealt with using GeniusVision NVR for me, the only need to go back into the settings is to re-set the clock (it seems to be running slow on my camera, not sure if it's a crappy clock crystal or if it's just not good at keeping time!)... :)

A custom interface would be nice though, something up-to-date and modern and not needing anything to do with IE or the dodgy ActiveX stuff... :)

The software allows you to configure a ntp server of your choice and how often it will sync. Settings for daylight savings also look promising.

Neither Genius Vision nor Surveillance Station for Synology acknowledge the camera's motion alarm out of the box. Will investigate later.

I'm looking into the power over ethernet world, I thought the camera supported it when I bought it. Now I'm not sure. It should work with a passive injector and splitter, surprisingly few store here keep those kind of things on the shelf, I have to order online I guess.

With a snip and a snap, I made my camera PoE compatible:

CCTV advice what to install etc,

Snipped the lump off, mapped the wires out, cut the blue wires back (not needed), snapped on an RJ45 after the camera was mounted, used a coupler to connect it to an ethernet cable, and then a PoE injector at the router-end of the cable and there you go, PoE compatible, just manually accomplished... :)

Thanks, I totally forgot that one. So it's 12V in ethernet cable, I wonder how long cable runs it allows before you suffer from voltage drops. I guess I have to try and find out.

I found a calculator online a while back, and at 12v it's not very long, somewhere around 10 to 15 metres I think...

Short update:
There's cheap PoE modules at Alibaba that fits inside our cameras. But I would need to buy a crimp tool for the cables that's more expensive than the cam itself.
Blueiris seem to have found a way to detect these cameras' motion alarm.
I took a peek using wireshark, the bundled cvs software doesn't talk to the onvif port, only 34567.
I still have no idea how to write a configuration file for Surveillance Station.
I think I'll put a dedicated laptop for this single cam for now.

Finally caught a perp, someone got burgled on this street on the 25th, and my camera caught the bugger trying doors, sent the footage to the police (the computer that I record on was playing up and declaring everything as "corrupted", only managed to get the video off it today), hope they can make use of it... :)
