some good fabricating stuff from this link including lamp post

Followed the link and was surprised that the vendor wouldn't dispatch the lamp post to France. Would have loved to see our postlady turn up in her van with it....

Update 1: the house has exchanged! We are moving on the 4th Sept.

Update 2: I sought some pre-planning advice regarding installing the dish in the garden and the council said that the planning permission is likely to be granted as long as it's not too high from the ground and there are no objections from the neighbours. The first point is relative (the higher, the better!) but will need to have a chat with the neighbours once we move - there are only 3 that will see the dish, so hopefully there are no arseholes there!
Hope you do not get a neighbor like I have. She did her extension with a low level Velux looking down on my patio. Council passed it because she would have to get on her knees to look out of it because its in a low level part of a cupboard. When I did my extension she objected using the human rights act about being able to see into her

Good luck! My neighbour complained because my dish was 1.2 up on a flat roof. Rather than bother with planning I changed it for a 1m dish. Since doing the extension above the kitchen I am a story higher so will go for the Masterfocus. Now you did say it is a very very good dish.

There are some total skanks out there. One of my immediate neighbours who will have a full brunt view of the dish I already know as they are a friend of the family. So, hopefully, that'll be smooth talking. One behind the dish will have a very partial view of the dish - though most of it will be behind the bush.

Just another one two doors down who will be able to see the dish that I need to speak to...

What about the bloke a few doors down that has something to do with planning Alex, have you spoke to him yet pal ?, I was advised to keep mine close to the house it would have been easier to put it up the garden the ground level is 5ft higher but keeping it close to the house is less impact so I was told and I guess it is, your looking at my wall/roof where it is.

I haven't spoken to him yet, Martin. Will do once I move in.

Keeping it close to the house is a no go for me. I'll just lose the eastern side completely and be no better off than I am now. Has to be at the end of the garden...

Sadly, not much to update with. A lot of work to do around the house but am building a workbench in the garage so I can actually put my crap in there along with my shiny new power tools.

Spoke to my immediate neighbours - both nice and had no objections to the 1.8m dish being installed (much to the wife's disappointment). So, will be submitting my planning permission application on Monday with crossed fingers. Need to speak to my neighbour two door down as well as they'll have a fairly open view of it... Don't know who they are, but hopefully they'll be reasonable too. Or maybe I shouldn't bother talking to them and wait for the application to be approved instead (then they can't say no...!).

May as well tell them if your applying for PP, they or someone else will see the notice at the front of your property so better to explain to them face to face rather than letting their imagination run riot after they read the PA notice.

Yeah good point. They are not in my road, so they can't see the front of my house but have an open view of the garden - at least where the dish will go.

Better to talk to them, at least you will have some idea of their views and not bothering may give them the wrong impression.

Result: that neighbour also has no objections - she even said "I don't see how it's any of our business what you do in your garden"... I liked that comment!

So, PP will be submitted tomorrow and hopefully will be granted in a month or two. Not too bothered on the time, I have loads of other stuff to do. I did manage to put the worktop together - it's even straight! And already full of crap on it!

Excellent - screwdriver, hammer, electric drill, BT wall socket, DSL filter, 24" Linear actuator - what you would find on any member's workbench!

...BT wall socket, DSL filter....
Don't get me started. The BT line comes in in the garage, next to power line cables, goes through 2 junction boxes before getting to the master socket. Had to rip this cabling out and put a master socket in the garage... away from power lines! Whoever installed it in the first place, should be shot.

Our master socket is in the corner of the loft, that's led to some heated (sometimes literally) conversations when dealing with script reading plebs in a call centre who insist on unplugging the front face and using the test socket. Six months ago Openreach replaced the pole outside our house but refused to replace the drop at the same time which would of allowed me to move the socket 2m down the wall into the front room.

If you're capable enough, you can move the socket yourself. I know you're technically not allowed but they really don't seem to care.

So, PP has been submitted and letters already sent out to surrounding neighbours. Had one knock on the door yesterday from one of the neighbours to say that she didn't realise that the dish was that big! Even though I told her. She asked to Have told her that I will blend it into the background and will also plant some hedges between her garden and ours - there's currently nothing to obstruct the view from their patio to where the dish will be.

She seemed OK with it - let's hope she doesn't voice concerns to the council about it!

With the hedges in place, she shouldn't be able to see any of my dishes, so I can have them in a row, like ducks! Certainly no-one on the other side will see them as there are enough hedges on that side anyway.

Looks like my planning application should be approved over the next 2 weeks or so... comments from the council:
Mr A... Erection of 1.8m satellite dish in rear garden.

RESOLVED: that councillors recommend supporting application for the following reasons:

Reasons for Recommendation: The satellite dish was to be positioned to the rear of the property and at part of the garden that would have minimal visual impact on neighbouring properties especially as it was to be painted in a camouflaged colour. There had been no letters of objection at the time of the meeting.
