Eutelsat must have had a few meetings about the current situation,

It will not be an easy decision to move all the C band & Ku band to another slot as thousands of dishes for Greece & Arab Ku band are aimed @ 3.1 east, C Band customers for French & Spanish Global reception in South America & African / European Cable customers,

Apart from a beacon Eutelsat 5 West B is not active,

Plans to send 7A half way around the globe may change as the situation is critical now it will be much easier in the short term to move 7A to 5 west.

Hotbird 13E looks like a contender to move to 5 west only 3 active transponders currently in use with 38 Ku band Tp's available & has 4 years left in geostationary orbit more than enough time to build Eutelsat 5 West C if Eutelsat 5West B cannot be repaired,

Two other Hotbirds currently at 13 east will become available in 2021 Hotbird 13B & 13C for further back up when they will be replaced by Hotbirds 13F & 13G,

If that happened they would have to re-orientate downlink dishes at countless terrestrial transmitter facilities all across France and Italy from 5°W to 3°E, so I’m very sceptical about that! I would expect that another bird will be moved across to step-in at 5°W as previously assumed.

The majority of both France and Italy’s national digital terrestrial networks are fed off 5°W, and in France a significant amount of the national FM radio network is too. It’s a critical orbital slot in that sense, so no doubt the problems with 5WB are a big headache for Eutelsat!

Considering some Arabic channels left eutelsat 3 degree in recent days, I think these changes have some reason.

Considering some Arabic channels left eutelsat 3 degree in recent days, I think these changes have some reason.

There have always been lots of channel changes on Eute 3B ever since she went into service. Until there is a wholesale clear out the evidence of a move to 5W is flimsy in the extreme.

Not just feeds for French & Italian terrestrial TV & Radio transmitters, there's also the Fransat "FTV" service to consider as well. Too many diddy DTH dishes in France are aimed towards 5 West for them to be forced to look elsewhere in all but almost the worst case scenarios.

Also, IIRC Eutelsat 3B is a satellite in the mould of the former "W" series which concentrated on delivering wide geographic footprints across EMEA for medium-sized dishes rather than focus on narrower, stronger beams primarily for DTH. The footprints on Satbeams.com suggest there are four high-powered Ku spot beams on 3B that in theory could serve France & Italy, but they're not mentioned on Eutelsat's own website.

Wouldn't be the first time though that a satellite operator has kept certain footprint beams quiet - when Astra 1N was originally parked at 28 East on a temporary basis, it had both a European beam and a spot beam intended for UK & Ireland. Once its job at 28 East was complete, when it then landed at 19 East, only a European footprint was made public! I remember looking at the original 1N spot beam and noticing its contours, it looked like it might have been intended to cover Spain & the Canary Islands.

All still very quiet with regards to further updates re 5west. Surely some decisions must have been made by now. I wonder if anything will be in place by Christmas?

Contenders for moving to 5 west in if a new satellite Eutelsat 5 West C will need to be constructed it will take 3 to 4 years,
Eutelsat 7A @ 7° East 57 Ku band Tp's Approx 26 Tp in use
7A Q2 2021 is the end of geostationary service short term,

Hotbird 13E @ 13° East with 38 Ku band Tp's only 3 in use
End of life Q4 2024 would seem to be the ideal contender as it is not needed @ 13 east now,

Hotbird 13B & 13C each have 64 transponders x 2 =128 transponders available with only 95 in use @ 13° East & 33 spare,

Eutelsat's silence is of some concern as they do not seem to be able to make a decision maybe 5 West B can be repaired but the lack of test carriers make this unlikely so looks like it is of no use @ 5 west as originally intended.

Something seems to be moving on Eutelsat 5 West B...

The Telemetry has been switched off on the frequency 11199.80 LHCP, and actived the frequency 12501.00 LHCP.

E5WB_TM_12501_L.png

Today the carrier test frequency 12585 H (at different times) and frequency 11675 H.

Today they have tested the 12585 H and the 12669 H again.

Still no news for Eutelsat 5W B.. I wonder when we get more news!

I also did a blindscan of 5W earlier this week and found some of the “France television” channels (France 2, France 4, France Ô) double on the same transponder. I wonder why they did that. I suspect it has nothing to do with the possible migration.
also Lyngsat or other websites don’t make any notice of it.

Considering there was supposed to be a statement by the end of November I think we can safely assume the news is not very promising for 5WB

Eutelsat is in trouble with this satellite not suitable for moving to 5 west due to the damaged solar panel so it will be decision time soon as 5WA has no time left as end of service is now for geostationary orbit has now past,

from Eutelsat's files:-
