Assigned to the Philippines, he ends up stranded on a small and desolate island — but letters from his love back home give him the will to survive his ordeal. Drama, starring William Eythe and Anne Baxter, alongside Michael O'Shea and Vincent Price (888)

14:55pm Heaven Can Wait (U) 1943

Don Ameche is always worth watching, regardless of the film. In this one he plays a roguish playboy who makes a deal with the Devil after recalling his life of sin at the entrance to Hell. Great, witty, stuff which was remade by Warren Beatty in 1978. With Gene Tierney and Laird Cregar

Patrick Bergin is suitably sinister as the violent villain, while Kevin Anderson and Elizabeth Lawrence co-star (888)

22:55pm Being John Malkovich (15) 1999

A struggling puppeteer starts a new job and discovers a magical portal which gives those who enter the chance to see through actor John Malkovich's eyes for a short time — and he soon comes up with a way to make money from his find. This magnificent offbeat fantasy comedy was Spike Jonze's feature-length movie debut, and it received a clutch of Oscar nominations. John Cusack, Cameron Diaz, Catherine Keener and, of course, Mr Malkovich himself, star (888)

01:05am The Blair Witch Project (15) 1999

Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez's smash-hit low-budget horror sees three film students head into the American backwoods to make a documentary about the fabled Blair Witch. But there's more to the urban legend than meets the eye. Heather Donahue, Michael Williams and Joshua Leonard star. The film scored highly at the box office thanks to excellent word of mouth reviews; sadly, much of the impact is lost on repeated viewings (888)

18:55 The Madness of King George (Film) 1994

His Majesty was all powerful and all knowing. But he wasn't quite all there. Alan Bennett's magnificent Oscar, BAFTA and Cannes Film Festival award-winning film stars Nigel Hawthorne as King George III, a vibrant and robust, if eccentric, leader accompanied by his wife and devoted partner Queen Charlotte and their children - all 15 of them - including the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York. Almost 30 years into his reign, the King begins to act in a bizarre fashion, spewing obscenities, attacking his wife's ladies-in-waiting and interrupting a royal concert to demonstrate his own supposed mastery of the keyboards. As his condition worsens, learned medical men attempt to cure him while a corrupt Parliament plots with the Prince of Wales to have him declared mad...

21:00 Secrets and Lies (Film) 1996

Hortense tracks Cynthia down and, after a fraught first meeting, a warm mother-daughter relationship begins to develop. Meanwhile, Cynthia's brother Maurice and his childless wife Monica decide to throw a party for Roxanne's 21st. Cynthia asks if she can bring a friend and invites a reluctant Hortense. In a traumatic moment Cynthia reveals the truth, and all hell breaks loose.

01:50 Manic (Film) 2001

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, probably best known here for Third Rock from the Sun, plays a teenager prone to sudden, violent outbursts. When one leaves a classmate needing 50 stitches, he's sent to a juvenile psychiatric hospital run by Don Cheadle. As he meets others in the group, including sexually abused Kerry and self-harming Tracy, debut director Jordan Melamed's film follows the group's dynamic, frictions and friendships in this almost documentary drama.

13:00 Down to Earth (Film) 1947

Terpsichore, the Greek Muse of the Dance, persuades "Mr Jordan" to send her to Earth to help Broadway producer Danny Miller stage his musical about the Nine Muses. She succeeds in bringing refinements to the show and is, naturally, given the starring role. But unsurprisingly, Broadway audiences are not ready for refinement and the show flops. Miller insists on restoring his original jazzed-up treatment and an understandably miffed Terpsichore asks Jordan's permission to return to Parnassus. But when Miller reveals that the gangster who backed the show will kill him if it flops, she agrees to stay on. Writers Edward Blum and Don Hartman ingeniously came up with an enjoyable screenplay using characters created by Harry Segall in his play Heaven Can Wait, which was turned into a successful film of the same name in 1943. Directed by Alexander Blum.

15:00 You'll Never Get Rich (Film) 1941

This was the first of a pair of movies in which Columbia's bosses teamed up Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth. The story concerns Broadway choreographer Bob Curtis who acts as fall guy for philandering producer Martin Courtland. He pretends to be the lover of the boss's chorus-girl squeezes whenever Mrs Courtland gets suspicious. Things get messy for Bob when he's asked to stand in for Martin with chorine Sheila Winthrop, who's secretly got a thing for her dance instructor - Bob. Caught out, Bob joins the army but when the old show comes to the camp to boost the troops' morale, he spots an opportunity to make it up with Sheila in Sidney Lanfield's classic musical.

16:45 The Siege at Red River (Film) 1954

Rudolph Mate's lavish, Technicolor Civil War action film stars Van Johnson as Confederate agent James Faraday, who steals a Gatling gun prototype from the Yankees easily enough. But smuggling it South through enemy territory proves decidedly tricky, especially with detective Frank Kelso on his back, treacherous scout Brett Manning double-crossing him, and with nurse Nora Curtis to protect.

18:35 Chariots of Fire (Film) 1981

Hugh Hudson's Oscar-winning film goes back to the 1924 Paris Olympics, where Cambridge student Harold Abrahams and devout Christian Scot Eric Liddell represented Britain on the track. Hudson's Oscar and BAFTA-laden tale of commitment, integrity and sacrifice follows their lives and loves before the two come together in Paris and as they compete at the Olympics, where Liddell must overcome issues arising from his religion.

21:00 Vera Drake (Film) 2004

Mike Leigh's Oscar-nominated and BAFTA Award-winning film stars Imelda Staunton in the title role as a working class wife and mother in post-war London who makes ends meet by cleaning for the upper-class as well as caring for her elderly mother and invalid neighbour. But she also helps girls "in trouble", from the daughters of her employers to the local women who cannot afford another mouth to feed. Although abortion is illegal, Vera sees it as a service rather than a money-making venture and her shock when one of her abortions goes wrong and she is arrested is believably palpable. With a supporting cast including Jim Broadbent, Phil Davis and Heather Craney, this is one of Leigh's most stunning, moving films.

23:25 Tell Me Something (Film) 1999

Yang Yoon-hyun's Korean thriller sees a serial killer terrorising Seoul. Their trademark is to dismember the body, but leave a part of their previous victim mixed in with the remains. Disgraced detective Cho is assigned the case and finds the clues leading him to museum curator Su Yeon, whose beauty blinds men to her mysterious path. Fans of Se7en and Basic Instinct may not find the plot totally original but the stylised violence and an unfamiliar Seoul more than compensate.

01:50 Twisted (Film) 1985

Ashley Judd plays Jessica Shepherd, a cop with a dark secret in her past, one that leads her to drink and one night stands. But when her bedfellows start turning up dead - victims of a serial killer - and she's assigned to the case, she begins to wonder if her drunken blackouts hide something more terrifying. Philip Kaufman's thriller also stars Samuel L Jackson, Andy Garcia and David Strathairn.

The first film in Claude Berri's diptych stars Gerad Depardieu as a city dweller who inherits a plot of land in Provence. Dreaming of the country life, he moves there with his wife and child, but soon finds that greed and jealousy exist as much in the country as in the town.
