Bit soon, I know, but can anyone shed any light/thoughts on this question I posed in post #3 above:
What are the "best guesses" (based on historical "evidence") of how long these receivers will remain "viable" in terms of automatic key
updates?

Simple - Either:
1) Until the manufacturers have a new receiver to sell. Then they will drop support for this receiver like a ton of bricks.

2) Until the pay tv providers start turning up the heat on them

A/S

Sort of what I guessed - so probably anything from a few days to a few months then.

Another thing crossed my mind: harking back to the recent cases of "loaded" Kodi box sellers being prosecuted, the way these sat boxes are being advertised, then the sellers could be in the same line of fire.;)

Remember the Skybox series of Receivers that succeeded Openbox?

They were put under pressure and changed their branding to Libertview ((Not so subtly much the same, if you think about it) before reverting to Openbox.

I understand they were popular CCCAM Client boxes.

I have two myself, because, like the one this Topic is about, it happens to be a very good cheap and cheerful multi-Sat box.

Theirs a receiver called Strong that's been supporting PVU auto roll for over a year now, as mentioned support could last a day could last a year PVU will have to up there encryption to stop it, do they have the funds who knows ?,

Main reason ive bought it was how quick the blind scan is and to see if it finds 16/32 APSK feeds

Thanks - very illuminating, but that probably happened before I began to get back into sat boxes and so on, and so I never got to know the Openbox/Skybox saga and products.

A little less analogue, and a lot more crap.

but it depends on the satellite right because some channels only show now and next?

There is always the teletext button.

Quality satellite kit only though.

I have one too. Not had to much time for testing, but I do concur with William1 this little box delivers a superb picture, the best of any receiver I have. Blind scan is fast, need to test it more on low SR's.

I've ordered a V8S non-combo box because it has sat RF loop-through and I don't need terrestrial/cable - think I missed the delivery today because we were out shopping, so off to the PO Sorting Office tomorrow morning.

No.

However, you can scan in the actual video/audio streams and store them as "Channels".

You cannot, however, make use of the MHEG features like Text.

oh so whats difference between fta receivers and just freesat receivers

Freesat receivers have:

MHEG.

Full seven day EPG.

Seamless OTA updating of Channel lists and Operating Firmware.

On PVRs, user-friendly Recording and Series Linking.

Their primary use is for simple operation on a single Platform.

FTA receivers are better equipped for multi-Satellite use and are far more flexible in terms of Channel numbering and naming, sorting etc. Many go further and have card Slots, Soft CAMS etc. to allow them to receive a range of Platforms.
