Beautiful captures Gordon, I was devastated when having to remove my feeders etc as the rats were taking over, I will put back in the autumn as the rodents appear to have succumbed to the hidden bait that only they could get to in the brick built den. The absence of blue tits, coal tits robins and sparrows has encouraged other birds to frequent our trees.
A goldfinch I think, the first I have ever seen here.

Planted a 'Butterfly Tree' which justs starts blooming, now will sit on a chair nearby, with the camera, and hope and wait :O)

A small wild orkide, an orange butterfly, unknown type.

btw, anyone knows flowers to plant which are good for making butterflies stop for a dinner ?

edit: just chased this orange\white, and it stopped for feeding :O)

edit2: live from the garden, a very small blue (wing 1 cm).

Number 4 is an Orange Tip (Strangely enough!)
Number 3 looks like a Fritillary .... I'll get my book out and get back to you.

Ok, could be a High Brown Fritillary or Niobe Fritillary, possibly even a Marbled Fritillary..... do you have any shots showing wing undersides?

PS: Buddleia is the usual top suggestion for attracting flutterbys.

We have a purple one and a white one, but they're not yet in flower this year.

Thanks for info. That's the one I called 'Butterfly Tree' in post above, it's just starting to bloom, and have big expectations. If 'working' will buy more. Still want to plant some butterfly-friendly flowers, any suggestions welcome.

And the minuscule blue one, can be identified ?

The Buddleia is a strange plant. It grows ferociously, blooms and then, because the stalks are so heavy, promptly falls over and breaks the stem.

Like all civilizations & empires through the times :O)

Must be cut down to a small size yearly (the tree... and probably our civilization (and EU) as well :0) then it should prosper afaik.

The last pic could be Short Tailed Blue.

Edit: Ah, no. The underside shown in the previous pic reveals it to be an Osiris Blue. Probably.

Not that common, so a good find.

Best overall match is Provençal Short Tailed Blue, but I'm not totally confident.

Do very well with my Buddleia, planted specially to attract butterflies, have experimented this year with pruning the top early and the bottom later, to see if I can extend the bloom period. Also look for whirling butterflies shrub, quite spectacular attraction. Buy gaura Gaura lindheimeri 'Whirling Butterflies'

The first is a Scarce Swallowtail. Distinguishable from the Common Swallowtail by the black tiger stripes and the especially long tails on the hindwings. Nice catch!

The species is actually protected by Law in many European Countries.
